Alright my caribbean bakers, I know caribbean people have a heart of gold, but how do you tell friends and customers that you have a business with expenses. Recently did a sweet 16 with two hundred cupcakes and a main full sheet cake, then I did a graduation party with fifty cupcakes, and a book cake. Both were for relatives who did not pay a dime, although I told them what it would cost up front. I really don't mind small orders, but this left me frustrated, especially since family members felt like I SHOULD have done it for FREE anyway. Any similar situations?

Yes Tonia I did had that problem too! I don't make any cake until they give me money or buy all the ingredients for me bc it was costing me money n I no longer paying out of pocket or using my products. They did talk about me which was ok but I stuck to my guns. Then they start taking me very serious n respecting me as a business woman. I put my foot down when their friends came to them asking if I can make them a cake n act like its for them ( family).

  • Thanks Faith, I realized afterwards my mistake and reposted - good looking out, thank you very much. Alicia, wonderful advice. I NEED to learn to say NO, as simple as it may seem, I do have that problem. I agree though, they should at least pay for the products and ingredients. I have no problems with strangers, we go strictly by my rules which usually involves signing a contract - only family. I know someone will be wanting something for father's day, so I am going to be prepared to give an ultimatum, pay for entire cake or buy ingredients prior to the date. Thank you so much for the advice.

I did have the same problem of saying NO. Just stay strong. Write your ingredients down just to have it ready, when they come give the list n stand there n let them know u need it so to start on the cake. Don't take any money let they buy it bc they will not want to give u you enough at first, lol! I been thru it, smh. Remember to stay strong n good luck with everything!

My recent victory is: I shipped  150 mini rum cakes to Arizona on Thursday and they arrived safely as told by the bride. I have shipped hundreds of rum cakes without decoration over the years but I was always skeptical of shipping cakes with icing.

This time the bride (from Guyana) said she was willing to take the risk. The shipping was reversed because her mom has a fedex account.  I  packed in peanuts, buttle wrap and put ice packs.

I was soo happy when she called me friday morning to say they were lovely and arrived safely. .  Yippee!  BTW this is my first post..
