Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hey all.. I was searching for caribbean balers and found this site. THANK GOD. I just started caking.. a few months now.. like 9 or so. really loving it.. despite the challenges and lack of readily available materials here in Dominca.

My question is I'm thinking about taking classes on cake decorating this summer, somewhere in the caribbean, as there arent any classes I'd want to attend here on island.

Does any one know of classes being offered anywhere.. PLEASE??

I went to the US....I don't know of any in the Caribbean...but I started one here in Jamaica and totally hated it!

Oh man!! This sucks.. I took like  6 classes with adult ed... It was like just pre-basics, for like house wives or something. But it really spurred my attention so then i started looking at vids online and then i really started to be excited!!

Would be so disappointed if i couldnt find a class!

I'm self taught, and I have found that books and online videos have been so helpful! I do want to take some classes this year. I think it will help to sharpen my skills. Are there any hospitality schools on your island? I would imagine you might be able to do some courses via a hospitality school that teaches culinary...

Nope.. no such thing here.

Are there classes on the Cayman Islands?

No we don't have any here...what about Puerto Rico? That's pretty close tou in terms of travel...

I will check online if i can find any there.. I cant believe that they're any in places like Barbados or even Trinidad

Hi Jodie

If you wish, you can explore the following teachers/institute here in Trinidad:

1) The Trinidad & Tobago Hospitality & Tourism Institute - a culinary school that offers courses ranging from bartending, event management, cake baking & decorating etc. I believe there is an intermediate and advance class. The tutor for the cake decorating course was trained by either Alan Dunn or Nicholas Lodge. I cannot recall.  Contact, www.hospitalitytnt.com or (868) 634 4250/4456 - 2144-6

2) Beharry Edward Sacred Heart Pastry Making, Cake Decorating & Culinary Institute – contact no, (868) 638-1114

3) Irma Hannays

4) Stephanie Evelyn (has extensive knowledge in gum paste flowers)

I do not have the contact info for the last two. However, I can try to locate same for you.

Teneisha, it’s great that you were exposed to being trained in the US. Apart from other countries, that’s where they live, eat, dream and even breathe cake :) I hope your experience was a wonderful one.

Faith, I’ve seen the work of many self-taught cake decorators and it is amazing. They were never trained. They were self-taught by the use of books, magazines and DVD’s.

Jodie, I hope I was of assistance.

Also, when you guys have time, check out the work of Branka Jovanovic, I think she is from Serbia. She indicated that she was self-taught using cake decorating materials from the US & the UK.

Kerry

It sure was Kerry...I would do it again in a heartbeat...I Plan to go back for some more advance techniques.

I just bought a book by Toba Garrett, wedding cake art and design...I hope to learn a lot form that...

You tube university is AWESOME!!! :)

LOL.. You Tube university!!+

Love it!! I have spent MANY MANY MANY hours looking at videos on youtube.. My hubby calls it "cake porn". (Dont ask)...

Kerry.. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

I also saw something somewhere online about HM Cakes in Trinidad.. have you ever heard of them??

Im self taught. I use youtube, books, joined cake sites and made lots of friends online and they gaved me lots of tips.
U better order DVDs or books. There's no way Im paying that kind of price for any classes.
