Crumb coating is when you cover the cake in a thin layer of icing. This thin layer will trap any loose crumbs so when you go to put on your final and outer layer of icing, it will stop any of those loose crumbs getting in your outer coat. There is nothing worse then icing your cake and getting crumbs stuck in it. lol

you are best bruching over the cake first to remove as many crumbs as you can before applying thin layer.

Thanks Melissa, so you should do a thin layer of buttercream or ganache before the final layer???? I have just been doing a thick layer...will have to try this way instead.
So excited...first cake decorating class this Wednesday :)

I always do and then I let it set for a bit, then I do a final layer over the top. Just so I can minimise the crumbs as much as I can.
Yes I got my email the other day about class starting this Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing what we will be doing this term.

Hi Jhoanee, I used to work over yout way not long ago. Crumb coating makes things so much easier.
