I would go 14", 10" and 6". Is the bride saving the top tier for her anniversary? If so you shouldn't count it in the servings. Is it to be served after a full meal? If so the portions would be smaller than if for a "cake and punch" reception where the cake is the main service. There's a great portion chart on the forums here, or you can go to:

This gives you the serving amounts for each 2-layer cake size. Good luck!
OH! And I just looked at your profile and you live in the same town in Oregon as my brother. Small world! I spent a good portion of my life in Sublimity.
Eileen is right. Those sizes would be good. Just did wedding for 60. The bride cake was 8" and 12" square and the grooms cake was a 12" square. There was still a good amount of cake left over. I had a slice of each. lol
thankyou so much for the wilton page i so needed it :)
The link from Eileen is great, as is this one from Wilton. I've printed both off and have them in a notebook. I particularly like the diagrams (link below), I like having a visual.

Hi there,

I work in a bakery and for a 3-tier round your best bet would be a 16" , 12' , 8'.
Excellent links ladies!!! Thanks so much for posting those up...
