Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am hoping someone on this site can help me out.  A few weeks ago there was a video on here demonstrating a clear mat for rolling out fondant...I believe the price was $15.99.  I have searched this site and so far am having no luck.  I did write down the phone number but am afraid I've lost it.

Thank you all in advance.

Hi Heather, That mat is a good price but I am wondering if it is Food safe, since it was found in the scrapbooking section.  You see the Sweetwise Mat is food safe, just want to caution you on its use. I also live in Canada and Sweetwise mailed it to me in a matter of 5 days....and the postage is really not to much. Just wanting to keep everyone safe....

Hi Guys,

Writing from Canada. Found the mat at Walmart (in the scrapbooking section) for $10.00.

Hi Sharon,

The mat is from Wilton so I am assuming it is food safe...YOu can also find fondant tools, piping bags and tips in the scrapbooking section.  I found there was more there than in the baking section itself.

At our Walmart the cake decorating section is right next to the scrapbooking section.

IS it the same "the mat"  is distributed by sweetwise and is 15.99 plus shipping.  The mat is 2 piecies of clear vinyl that you can roll your fondant between. Developed by sweetwise and is food safe.

I got my mat at     www.sweetwise.com  , yes it is two clear sheets what you roll your fondant out with.  Just don't forget to treat it like they say on the video...it works so well.  I paid $15.99 plus postage.

I'm pretty sure the Wilton mat she's referring to is the one you just roll the fondant out on and it has measurements marked on it so you can see how big your fondant is (kind of like the old pie crust mats).
Go to Wal-mart to the fabric section, there they have vinyl, get a yard and use that it is the same thing, there are different thickness so get a medium thickness. And you can use two pieces and place the fondant in between the two sheets and it works great.

Leslie, the down side is that vinyl isn't food safe.  There's no telling what toxins are included in the vinyl since it isn't intended for use with food.

LOL that why you wash it in a little beach water for 20 minutes then rinse very very well, then place in dryer for 15 to 20 seconds, I learned that from many professional decorators from many years ago. Food grade vinyl is only the way it is handled, not the chemicals in it. So I haave been told by manufacturer of vinyl and plastic bags. Only use the clear vinyl.
