Use of Wired Decorations

When I see cakes with wire decorations inserted like shooting stars etc, I wonder what kind of wire is being used?  Is there concern for "food safety" issues?  Are wrapped floral wires being used??  Is there a particular kind of wire that is purchased just for cakes?  Does it really matter for the little bit of wire that is inserted into the cake??  Any comments or suggestions....
