Tinting and Painting gum paste/fondant

for coloring gumpaste I just use my regular gel colors...black didn't work out so well, but others did just fine. I found (at Walmart) a set of water color pencils...they look like regular colored pencils, but after drawing with them you can brush water on and get a water color effect. Also, I bought a set Sharpie permanent markers, they come in some great colors!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I am making a placque, I like to use carbon paper to lightly trace the picture onto the gumpaste and then color it in. Even though these things are non toxic, I personally feel that it makes them inedible, at least to me to be on the safe side. I usually try to make those kinds of pieces as keepsakes anyway.

I always knead gel colors into the gumpaste and fondant and then once the item is dry I dust them with colors to give an extra dimension of color. Once you dust the items you will need to steam them to set the colors.

To paint with the gel colors, I like to use vodka. I put it in the bottom of a small glass bowl, then dab the color on the side with a toothpick. I dip my brush in the vodka then in the color. I find I get more control and a deeper color that way.

Sherry if you use sharpies and color pencils they they are not edible.

I heard someone say about the Vodka. I will have to use that next time.

Gretchen... I am dusting flowers right now for a cake this weekend... the BEST way to go is use PETAL DUSTS... the luster dusts add the sheen and the petal dusts make them look real... I will post pics as soon as I get these dusted. You actually dry brush the dust onto the petals then set it by passing it through steam. They turn out sooooo pretty. I just got Nicholas Lodge's DVD and a book of his and Edna's new DVD... if you want to learn how to dust flowers I'd recommend either of them. You can tint your gumpaste first but I have found making them white then dusting works great... however on roses... I tint the paste in 3 shades that are a very slight difference in shades and make the bud with the darkest the next round in the medium and the next round of petals in the lightest... then dust the edges for a realistic look.

Great ideas...thanks everyone...the vodka is better to use because I have found that the lemon flavor sometimes leaves a yellow tinge.
