Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

So, what did everyone think of The Next Great Baker? I was so excited to watch it and then I realized I missed it at 10 pm. I saw our member Jay Qualls in the commercial, so I'm really dying to find out when the first episode is airing again.

I'm watching  it now but I missed the first 20 minutes.  Whatever I missed I will watch on another day.

I posted a similar thread in the Cake Boss Fan group. :)  General concensus is that it's a pretty good show - but WTH about the woman who left her cakes in the oven!! O_o  The other comments were mostly about the guy who did the "vine" cake. Not pretty.  Not pretty at all.

I watched it, thought it was ok.  I am hoping I like it more as I get into it.  I have Buddy's new books so I am interested in trying some of his recipes, he says they are the ones they use at the bakery, but on a smaller scale since their ones make tons of cakes and such.  But I thought the person that went home deserved to go home for the most part.  I am interested to see what you think when you do get to watch it because something happened that I personally was floored by but don't wanna give it away.

Okay, I need to see the whole show. I believe I missed too much to make any type of comment.  So I will watch it again tomorrow, Friday afternoon.  What I get from this new show is it will be a continuation each episode until a final person and challenge is complete - the winner.  Or does it end with all of the contestants in a couple of weeks and start again with more contestants and then a final bake off?  I don't know, does anyone?

I appreciate how no one is really saying too much about the show as to the contents.  I'm sure all of us who missed it or saw part of appreciates the holding back.

Doesn't this show remind you of that other show where they cooked dishes and then they did a team effort and then something else.  Hmm, does that tell you anything that I did watch that show completely.  It was a complete season of the same people with similar challenges.  Just different circumstances.  Again, I didn't finish watching it and I would only watch what I wanted to watch.

I love to cook too!  I just don't care for all of the personal drama between each of the contestants in the cook show.

It also reminds me of the next person who was a clothing designer.  Ooops, I'm not a fan of sewing or designing clothes but I saw commercials.

I love caking as a hobby - I like Buddy - I like some shows - I really enjoy TLC - I have no opinion, LOL.

My guess is that they will probably do this challenge each season, as they do with The Next Food Network Star and Top Chef. Imagine, Buddy gets paid for the show AND the winner is going to work for him for free. (I'm assuming it's not a paid internship or they wouldn't call it an internship, they'd call it employment). Not a bad deal!

I DVR'd it and watched it.  I liked it, although I think it follows the whole Top Chef/Project Runway formula a little too closely so it's pretty predictable.

I've taken a class with Jay and he's been so gracious to me with his time and advice.  I thought he did a great job and I think he's one of the contestants that's gonna make the show fun to watch.

I liked the way Jay jumped in and helped out a few people while he had some spare time.  Very nice!!

The box truck at the end is a little cheesy but over all I liked the show.  Eileen, I"m with you on the gal who left her cakes in the oven over night.  Seriously?!  Who does that?  She should have been sent home right then and there.

What I wonder about is: They have all those ovens to use - the largest cakes would take what? an hour? Which means they had at least an hour and a half to mix up and pour the cakes, an hour to bake, a half hour to cool then they could wrap and cool them in the fridge.  How long does it take to mix cake batter?  Especially in those big ol' mixers?  And I could see that there wasn't one large mixer per person, but even if you had to do several smaller batches in the smaller mixers, it shouldn't take an hour and a half!! O.k. - I'm done ranting. LOL. (I also have an issue with her voice - but I don't want to get personal)

Okay, I will watch when I have the opportunity.
