Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Dear experts (and anyone else that has an idea for that matter),

I want to make a square base about 5 inches square on which to place a cake topper, so that it can be taken off a top tier and repositioned on a bottom tier so the cake will work for 2 parties.  What do you think is the strongest medium to use for this - pastillage, modelling paste, gum paste?  I don't really want it to be solid as it will be too heavy for the cake it will stand on.  I would prefer to have it like an upside down empty box.... The topper shouldn't come out too heavy as it will be a silhouette and a kind of plaque.  Any ideas appreciated, thanks

I'm so impressed Gail - yes colour away, do what you like with it.  Looking forward to seeing the results.

thank you Katy , also if you didnt ask about a medium i would never have know about it . its a new toy for me , thank you , june sent me the recipe , i found the same one she sent me , , thanks again to my bestie ; x

:))

I've only used pastillage for things like plaques and flat tile-like features.  They are great to use for cocoa painting, and you can also use alcohol, such as vodka, mixed with gel colors and color dusts to treat like water color and make paintings on the plaques.

My question on this medium subject is: Could you just frost a foam dummy with royal icing and use that for the topper base?

Cyn, thanks again for taking the trouble to reply.  The foam base is actually what I ended up doing - covered in fondant however as I wanted to emboss it.  Didn't come out too bad and I'll be posting pics of the finished thing in a couple of days.  x
