Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get a template for a ribbon?  I'm making a cake tonight for a breast cancer survivor, who is celebrating being cancer free for 5 years tomorrow.  I'm just making a simple sheet cake but in the shape of the breast cancer ribbon.  I've tried blowing them up on the copier at work but that just isn't cutting it.  It's not big enough.  I could free hand it and that is probably what I am going to wind up doing but I'd figure I'd ask to see if anyone knew where I could print a template.  It's only about a 13 x 9 pan.  I'm not exactly sure what size it is.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Just cut out a strip of fondant and bend it into shape. I don't think you need anything complicated for this type of ribbon.
That's an idea. I could do that. I'm not going to be covering the cake though so I'm not pulling out the fondant. But that did just give me an idea to just use a real ribbon. Well a length of ribbon in the shape of a giant ribbon and cut from there. Thanks!
Well, you could pipe it with a rose tip if you're not using fondant.

I'm actually cutting the cake in the shape of ribbon. Kind of like this pic

Trisha, I have had this problem too...unfortunately when you want to print a template you are limited in the sizes of paper you can use so the size of the template is limited as well!!!! You could try taking the one you printed to a copier servies and enlarging it...but not really sure if that is cost effective or not.

PS...love this cake
Sorry, I misread this. I didn't realize the cake was in the shape of the ribbon. Oopsie.
Hi Trisha, not sure if this would make it easier but when I look at this I see a # 8, if I had to make this cake I would make one ring cake and one round cake and cut it from there, then it would just need to be iced to look like the ribbon ?

First of all thanks for all your help!! All I can say is what a disaster I had last night. This should be under cake woes for sure. First of all the cake came out great. It baked even for the most part. I hardly had to trim. I taped 2 pieces of paper together and I just free handed a ribbon. I'm sometimes blessed in the drawing department (Thanks mom!) So the template actually came out pretty awesome. I cut out the cake and decided to do a nice thin crumb coat. I put the final layer on after that and that's when things went wrong. I thought it was going to be easier to move to the cake board (a question I will have to ask all of you later) Well lets just say that it did not cooperate at all. I knew I should have iced it on the board. So 2 spatulas, 2 offsets, and a cake lifter later It's on the board....cracked and ripped in a couple places. Then I couldn't get the spatulas out. I don't know what I was thinking. They just continued to rip the cake even more. This is what I had left.

It's almost 11pm at this point. I'm leaving the house at 4:15am to get to work so there is no way that I could have baked, cooled, iced, and finished a new cake. After my mini melt down I tried to fix it. It was just not really fixable at this point. Then I'm like....OOOOOhhhh I think I have fondant some where...I'll cover it. I really didn't want to use fondant for this cake. But at this point I had no choice. It was either that or throw it out. So I rolled it out, covered it, smoothed it and it got better. I also cheated. At this point I just wanted to make things easier. I didn't color the fondant. I knew I had some pink spray left over from some cupcakes I did. So I sprayed and Viola!, Pink Ribbon cake. Most definitely not the best cake I have ever done. I wasn't going to put my name to the uncovered cake. I'm a little hesitant about putting my name to the new and improved but in the end I still want my friend to have her surprise cake. I hope she enjoys it.

I've taught high school kids to decorate cakes for the last 28 years, and the best part of it for them was that even their first 'disasters' tasted great! Your friend won't know the troubles you've had if you don't tell and people who don't decorate are impressed with even our accidents, so don't beat yourself up about a problem cake!
