Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hello - I am new to this group and thrilled that I found it.   I am a "reborn" cake decorator.   I was going to be a pastry chef in my younger days and took a cake decorating class - my teacher told me I had the nature gift and could do well.   Timing was not right and I didn't pursue and have just dabbled over the years.    With all the wonderful new cake shows and techniques and artistry I have been seeing, it has really fired up that passion again.

I hope to start a not-for-profit in the future but am considering starting a cake business.   There are zero jobs in my area as a cake decorator and I'm not sure I'm really up to speed to keep up with that volume right now.  With the resources such as youtube, this blog and books and practice, I believe I can create cakes that are beyond my family use.

I know many people make cakes from their home - do people on this forum do this or try to comply with the health dept.

I know there is much to learn on the business side - are people having success with their own business?

Hi Cheri! I just discovered this site as well. :)

I live in Delaware County, trying to get licensed (or even a step in that direction), and not having much luck. Right now my cake partner and I are baking strictly for friends, family, and no income. I'm aware of several bakers in this vicinity that are not licensed and caking, but honestly I'm a little scared to. Not sure what my county or the state of Indiana will fine/do to you if you're turned in & who knows if getting caught will make the process of being approved down the road more difficult?

Now...promise I'm done being a Debbie downer on my first post! I hope if you start looking into opening your own cake business, you have a little bit more luck. As hard as it has been to deal with the Health Department, there are actually some really nice resources for small businesses/start ups in Indiana. If you look up the Indiana Small Business Development Center, you can check out the different workshops they offer that will help you assess your feasibility, finances, licenses, etc. Also, there is a SCORE office in Anderson. They will consult with you on your business idea at no charge-doesn't matter if it's currently a nice dream or a place that's been in business for years.

Happy Decorating!

Welcome Cheri to our wonderful cake site!

I do believe people on this site who bake from home or a small business or "at-home if their state allow" and I would hope everyone would comply with the health department if they sell items to anyone.  As for business, check out all of the Professional members and I think even the non-professional members who are trying out are all going to be doing well with their own business.

All businesses have the same structures:

Finances

Attitude

Customer Base

Product is only in demand when it is excellent, in caking that means taste and designs.

I believe that everything I outlined above is true for all businesses and not just one type.  Do your homework thoroughly and investigate your customer base in your area.  Most of all, have fun and enjoy whatever you do because it truly is All Attitude!

You can also look into the co-op kitchens, where you can rent a professional kitchen space by the hour or day. Sometimes you can also get licensed that way, but it just truly depends on your local laws. Welcome abroad and glad to have you here. Happy caking!!!
Welcome Welcome!!!
