Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am looking at the Cook's Stand-Mixer and also the Kitchen Aid Mixer.

They come in different sizes, colours, and speeds.

What are your recommendations?

I think I will be getting a Kitchen Aid. Thank you for all your recommendations. I am looking at the Artisan Series 5 Quart (4.73 litre).
I have a 20 year old standard kitchen aid, and an 8qt Anvil commercial. I used to make my own fondant, and the comercial mixer was the only one that could handle it!
I have always used my Kitchen Aid Counter Top Mixer for my homemade fondant...it is great, does not even struggle at all.
And now that I am having problems with my hands, the fact that the mixer can do 95% of the kneading for me gives me hope that I can continue with cake decorating.(maybe my husband will do the last part for me---hey good idea).
Kitchen Aid is definitely the way to go! I would recommend getting the splatter guards for the sides though, keeps the powdered sugar from flying! I also have seen the new paddles that have a spatula type edge- I'm looking at getting one of those!
I have had a 5 qt. mixer for years (still do) and it has had the gears replaced once and it has been replaced once in each mixer. One is about 10 years old and the other is about 7 years old. We also have a 20 qt Hobart and a 75 qt (?) - 5 ft. high mixer (for dough mixing). They are in excellent condition and I make cakes, icings, fondant, everything, everyday, for years with the KitchenAid mixers. The trick is (I think), to try not to put the mixers under too much strain. If you hear it "struggling", stop. If you don't, you will KILL it. Gears can be replaced by anyone who does basic mechanic work. The cost to purchase the gears is about $80.00-85.00, with shipping included in that price. The Hobart mixers are great. IF you can afford it and have the space for it, the 20 qt. mixers are wonderful also. You must have the business and income to justify a purchase of this magnitude.
