Just to say I too have the special boxes, AND use dry ice. That doesn't mean that the carrier themselves will pay attention to what is on the box.

I've only shipped my bundt cakes, and I still made sure I gave it a hard freeze and shipped overnight, and it made it safe from Baton Rouge, LA to Columbia, SC, but I would be so afraid using anything iced. Great question and I will be checking for any good suggestions as well.

Well, my experience with the USPS has been a good one, i do pack my cakes around in plastic wrap, dowels from top to bottom, as I said before cover in fondant. i attach a few pictures of the cake wrap in the shipping box.

Livia, looks like a great packing job but does the paper inside your styrofoam box cause dents in the fondant? Glad you are having success with this method.

No Deah, i just forgot to take a picture with the bubble wrap that goes around the cake too. It will not dent if the carrier handle the package properly. The only thing that I don't like is that shipping varies per postal zone and i don't now how much i would spend until i am at the post office. You can have an idea of how much you will spend by measuring the box and the weight, go to http://www.usps.com/tools/calculatepostage/welcome.htm?from=home_he..., to have an idea.

Where did you get the sytrofoam container that this cake is in?
Also, where do you get your packing materials, such as dry ice...bubble wrap and anything else.

I've shipped a small heart shape dense cake that was covered in ganache as testing to my family. I sent one from Ft. Lauderdale to Orlando and another cake from Ft. Lauderdale to North Carolina using USPS.
I wrapped the cake with clear wrap many times and placed in a cake box, then wrap the cake box, place the cake box in a bigger box. I marked the box with big letters (multiple times) "This Side UP" with an arrow. When the cake has arrived, it was obvious that the box was turned upside down many times. So I can't trust the "This side UP" sign and expect people to follow the instruction.

I have only shipped one cake: to my son in college. It was decorated in fondant; I wrapped carefully with saran wrap, then placed it in a regular cake boxed. I went to FedEx and they added shipping peanuts inside that box. Put peanuts at the bottom of a shipping box; carefully placed my cake box in it and added more peanuts until it was snug. I had it at FedEx Thursday morning, at 8:00 and my son opened his cake on Friday, at 11:30 am, on the day of his birthday. There wasn't one single dent on it! We did not use dry ice, or anything else, and it is my understanding that he and his friends were still eating cake the following Tuesday!
Cost: almost $ 90.00 after packaging, materials and shipping.

Wow, it sound terribly hard to get a decorated cake delivered. I am trying to figure out how to send a decorated cream cheese buttercream carrot cake to someone, and I would like it to arrive still looking like it does when it leaves my hands.....Thank you all for the information that you have posted and I will be looking into the dry ice containers and the corrugated boxes. Ugghhhh ....why can't anything be simple??? And, my mailman...we call him the "pokey mailman"...cause he is sooooo slow....would deliver it on it's side or leave it at the door in the rain. lol
