Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Well, I finally decided to splurge and try out some Satin Ice for $20 for 1kg.  I took some little pieces and put them side by side with my Bakels Ready to Roll Fondant that I buy for $7 for kg.  So many people have told me on this site and others and in real life that Satin Ice is soooo delicious and everyone eats it.  Well, I couldn't for the life of me tell the difference!  And neither could anyone else in my house - and still no one wanted to eat the fondant.

Satin Ice - at $20 a kg, it can stay on the shelves.  Even if it tastes a little better, it's certainly not worth 3 times the price!

I have usually been able to get a 20 lb bucket of Satin ice for $62 (includes shipping) - it is worth buying the large amount because it is cost effective and stores well.  I can cover quite a few cakes with 20 lbs.  I like it Satin Ice because it does not sweat as much if you refrigerate the cake.  It can also be frozen, which I like if someone wants to save the cake top for their 1 year anniversary.  I have also found that it is a lot more flexible to work with than the Pettinice - I find the Pettinice drys out quickly and gets almost crumbly.

i make my own fondant, i use the wilton marshmallow fondant recipe, it's so easy to make and tastes really great! and it makes 2lbs for about $7-$9 depending on your cost for mini marshmallows and icing sugar.

Kylee is in Australia ...

Satin Ice is an imported product here..thus expensive. It is the same product US/Canadian consumers purchase.

Each Bakels company manufactures their products in their own countries using ingredients from that country. Thus, Pettinice varies according to country of manufacture, as it is formulated for the country of origin.

Bakels RTR [Pettinice] is a good versatile product, used widely in AU.

There are other commercial brands [not cheaper], as well as plenty of homemade sugarpaste recipes as well as homemade marshmallow fondant  ...

That is interesting that Bakels manufactures with different ingredients in each country - I had no idea.  That would explain my experience with it.  I wanted to try it because all of the cakes covered in fondant that I have seen from AU cake artists are so beautiful and many have mentioned using Bakels...I was wondering what the deal was when I tried it :)  I certainly think you have to use what is most cost effectively available in your area.  Shipping and import costs just aren't worth it!  I have to wonder how Satin Ice handles their imports to other countries or if they do the same thing as Bakels.
