Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Good afternoon everyone.  I will be doing a wedding cake in October and the bride wants red velvet.  I've never made one before and frankly am not fond of them.  I've found several recipes that I'm trying out and have found one or two that I will probably use.  My dilemma is the icing.  All of the icings I've found have been really soft and this cake will have lots of decorations.  I'm thiniking of using buttercream, but don't know how that will taste with the red velvet.  Any suggestions?????

Vanilla buttercream taste fine on RV but cream cheese is the Southern standard.
You can use a cream cheese buttercream. I use a combo of cream cheese and butter. It is not as sweet as buttercream. I think all buttercream is a bit too sweet for red velvet. I use the red velvet mix and make my version of the WASC with it. It is really good.
It is really good with buttercream. I have done that. Also, cream cheese icing is good with it. There is a recipe on cakecentral.com for a crusting cream cheese icing that you can decorate with. It is really good.
Edna De La Cruz has a great crusting cream cheese recipe on her website. Vanilla bc is great on red velvets, and is apparently the more "authentic" icing. However, my personal opinion is that the South perfected the cake with cream cheese frosting :). You can always fill the cake with cream cheese frosting and ice the cake in vanilla bc if you find that easier as well.
The first one I did, I used the cream cheese icing. It was just too soft. Thanks for the great suggestions. I'm going to try them all. I'll post back and let everyone know how it worked out. Thanks again!!!
