Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Am I the only one that posts details of the cake when I post a picture?  This has always been kind of required on other forums and I just do it by habit.  But I notice no one (or few any way) else does.

Or is this not allowed and should I stop doing it?

I gotta say, I think it's a great habit to get into.  People post their pics with absolutely no explanation and then we all have the same obvious questions.  How did you do that?  What it is it?  Why did you make it?  What technique did you use?  This personalizes it for us all and actually helps us to get to know you as a person better - not just an anonymous name on a cake forum.

example:

Cake for my first grandbaby and the first time I made homemade fondant. I'm so glad I tried it!  The strings are actually fondant made with a clay gun.

Or

Cake for a repeat customer.  Hand-carved, iced cream cheese icing, decorations are Satin Ice, had a heck of a time matching the blue on the invitation.

Silly things like this make it so much more enjoyable.

And posting a description of the pic in the subject line would be so helpful when we are searching for something of that style later.

I'm not a moderator and ultimately this is none of my business and not my call to make.  But as a member, I would love to see "descriptive words" with people's cakes pic.  I honestly love reading the stories behind the cakes almost as much if not more than the pics themselves.

I agree with you, Dawn.  So I always try to write something on the site or at best I refer people to my blog.  Sometimes, I think some people just want to see the picture because there are a lot more people who have the experience and can or know the "How to do it".  Me on the other hand, I love to hear about the cake, filling, techniques because that is how I learn and get more excited about caking - new ideas, new ways, new experiences and heck just the fun stories are great to read!

My first passion is crafting with paper, mostly making hand-made cards - some scrapbooks - other things.

My point to be taken here is since I taught people to enjoy that craft, I try to continue my way of doing things.  I always know there are other ways of doing things but at least others can get a start from seeing the how and what I do.

There is NO POSITIVELY RIGHT WAY of doing anything.  That is why there is sharing!

I know there are a lot of people here who share a lot and that is what makes it so much fun!

There are contests and there is not too much to say about those cakes because it is a theme and told what to do by the contest rules.

Pictures have a story, so be aware, in my opinion, I think most people share everything as much as possible.

You can always ASK when you see a cake that you are really interested in too.  I have with success!  People SHARE on this site!  Just look a bit more and ask, we share!!!!

Go to the person's page when you see a cake.  YOU might be surprised because they might have written something up.

Have fun exploring!

I have clicked on several pictures to find nothing written (more than not) and ask away and it may be days, if ever, before a response is given.  I guess I'm looking at the wrong cakes.  LOL!  A few people do respond right away.  Which is nice.

Paper crafting - I envy you.  That's something that no matter how hard I try, I'm just horrible at.

I'm happy that you are getting some responses.  Not everyone does check the site each day.  Be patient and enjoy as much as possible.

Good idea, Dawn.  I'll try to get better at my descriptions.
This is a good point.  I have been guilty of not taking the time to properly label my photos.  It is important because it makes the photos more searchable, and therefore a better tool for us all to use both as a way to showcase our work, and to find inspiration for cakes we haven't made yet.
Dawn, yes, I would love it if everyone did this. It would be so helpful for people who want to make the cake. I'm still trying to get everyone to title their photos so they are not labeled with a numerical file name, but not everyone does this. I can ask people to contribute in the spirit of helping others, but I cannot force them to do it. This is an excellent point and will add it to the website tips page.
Excellent point, Dawn!  I always try to put a little something about the cake each time I post.

Well, whew!  I'm not the only one that feels this way.  (wink)... I'm usually a lone wolf in my reasoning.  LOL.

GUILTY!  I am always in such a hurry when I post something and "think" I will go back and edit it later only to not get to it.  It is nice to have info there though!

I'm guilty too!!  Usually on my way out the door to my day job when I post... sorry.  I will try to do better.
I try to label most of the time, unless I'm in a rush.  I love to read the descriptions as well! Thanks for this discussion!
