Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I purchased the Patchwork snowflake cutters and tried using them today.  I must be doing SOMETHING wrong.  I tried straight fondant - didn't work.  Tried fondant with a light layer of crisco over it - still stuck. Tried cornstarch.  Stuck again.  Tried using gumpaste - better, but not great.  Greasing the cutters didn't work.  The directions say to use Mexican paste, but when I read the directions for it, I realize you probably wouldn't want to eat it.  It's mostly gum tragacanth and, like gumpaste, I imagine the texture would be hard to eat.

I envisioned using these snowflakes to add a lacy touch to a blue fondant-covered cake (oh, I can see it in my head and it's lovely) - but if it is covered in gumpaste or mexican paste snowflakes, the consumer would have to peel all those off before eating it. :(  One of the big deals I make about my cakes is they are not just 100% edible - they are 100% "eatable" - meaning you'd WANT to eat it all!

Has anyone found a way to use these with fondant and, if so - how'd you do it??

Try rolling your fondant out and letting it dry for a few minutes. I do this with the tappits letters and it works great. Also, use lots of PS on your cutters.
The first post is very correct. Also add some tylose to the fondant of your choice and let it sit up and dry out a little. I use fondarific to cover my cakes, but I will use Wilton Brand for things like this, for decorations, because I can let it sit out and dry out and firm up and it does very well, I won't usually get to much strecth, like you do with the gourmet fondants.... don't give up, you will get it... I have been using patchwork cutter a lot, n never had a problem. You need to grease the cutter before you cut the paste. I have used this with gumpaste, mazipan, fondant. Offcourse gumpaste give a neat finish, but you will need to neaten the fondant or mazipan after removing the cutter. Your can also emboss the cutter directly on fondant, paint it or use the cutter to cut out the bits & parts in the required colour. I have posted a video on how to use the cutters on you tube. check my blog there is a video posted there.

Thanks for the recommendations! I will say I'm impressed with Patchwork's customer service. I emailed Marion yesterday and she responded personally this morning!! Very nice! I think I'll soldier on today and try a few of the suggestions I got from her and from you all. Another idea may be to use the cutters to emboss my cake and then use a little gum glue and pearl dust to make the snowflakes. We'll see. :)
