Hi, My name is Brian. I joined this site a month or so ago. I have been decorating cakes since the late seventies. I am a hobby baker/decorator. I work as a cook in an assisted living facility and do the monthly birthday cakes for the residents. I make and decorate in the kitchen at work. I will get the courage to post pics.

Hi, my name is Carolyn.  I've joined Cakes We Bake recently and have enjoyed reading the requestion and replies and I've learned a lot.  I've been decorating as a hobby/semi business for over 15 years now and am still learning tricks to the trade.

Thanks for the suggestion June!  I'm definitely going to be checking that out.

Welcome to Cakes we Bake  Karen

Since u are Canadian, you might want to ck out another Cake site: Canadian Cake Decorators Guild.  Started locally in Dundas, On., by Lynne of Let Them Eat Cakes.  I took a advanced fondant/gumpaste course with her when this site was just local & called The Cake Spotters Guild.
Lot of Canadian product on the site, and there are more & more chapters added.  I am not sure if there is a chapter near you.  You would have to ck out the site & see.

Hi to All of you,

I am from South Africa and joined Cakes we bake about a week or two ago.  This website is so amazing and awesome!  I just do not see many South African Cake Decoraters here, most is from other Countries.  But that is still wonderful.  Thank you so much, your cakes as stunning, I have already learnt so much by watching the videos and chatting to some of you about how you did somethings on your cakes.  I am baking out after hours, work normal office hours and still come home and bake & decorate a cake on order.  I love to do it, currently busy with another decorating course.  This is really a passion for me.  I hope we will have a long and happy friendship here on Cakes we bake!

Thanks, I hope all have a wonderful week ahead!

Kind regards,

Esmé

Hello Everyone!!

My name is Selena D. living here in Anchorage, Alaska.  I needed some "me time" so I choose to take a wilton course and loved it... So I make cakes to pull away from the day to day stresses. I am a beginner but as long a people at work and round me love the cakes I make and the decorations, I will continue to make them!  I don't intend on making this a professional career at all... (because I am afraid that I might loose that Lovin Feelin to make the for others). So to see something I really like and beable to come with the same results keeps me going. I am looking forward to see everyones wonderful creations and reading the tips that may shave HOURS of fustrations!!

Hi!  My name is Dawn "tryingcake."  I've been in the catering business for almost 28 years and started doing my own cakes about 8 years ago.  I was born and raised in the Akron, Oh area.  Spent the next 20 years in Charlotte, NC (which I still call home) and I've lived in SoCal for 10 years now.

I joined this board a couple of months ago after Ladycakes.com (a great personal friend)  announced she was shutting down her site at the end of this year.  I looked hard for a cake forum where there wasn't any bickering and stabbing going on and just plain hate being thrown out there left and right.  Let me tell you - it's hard to find!  I've joined and quit so many other forums in the last two months.  So far, I really enjoy this site and look forward to hanging out here.

OMG!  Your grammar is great... only here 6 years?  I would still be stumbling if I had to learn Slovakian.  I'm horrible at languages, even when immersed in the culture.  2 years after living in a Spanish dominant speaking community, I was still doing a lot of pointing and gesturing to try to convey my message.

Making mistakes is the best teacher!  People are so afraid to make mistakes.  That is absolutely the only way you will learn why things work the way they do and give you conficence to try more things.

Good for you!!

Hello. My name is Majka. I am originally from Slovakia but I live in TN since 2005. I have always enjoy baking cakes, pies but after a few months of baking cupcakes, I have to say - I love it. It is like obsession :)

Funny thing is - I thought I know how to bake-until now.

I learn something new every day. Usually on my own mistakes. :)

Btw -please, excuse my bad grammar. I will do better one day :)

Yesss! I love how everyone on this site is so open with advice and suggestions. Not many places out there where people get that these days, when we've all got our backs "up against the wal-mart" as it were, we need to succeed together as an industry before any of us can excel as individual bakers!

JJ - what I love most is how people answer the questions at hand here.  Not go off on a tangent first about whether you are legal or not.  I am so over that on other boards.  UGH!  I happen to be legal, but honestly, I do not expect most people on these boards to be.  It is a lot of people (myself included) wanting to to learn - asking "How To" questions and hoping to get answers on that one simple quetsion - not get badgered.  That's all - it's that simple.  I love how we can ask a question and that question gets answered - and no one hollers first about how you need to be legal before you do that - and then a fight breaks out.

I knew I would find peace somewhere.  I only had to keep looking.

Hey Brian
I am sure your cakes are awesome & you are a great cook to boot. The Chef/Cook at my deceased father's LTC facility was awesome. He really out did himself on holiday's with his cakes & cookies.
Don't be shy, post a few cake picks!!
Thanks a bunch Cindy.  I love my little people and enjoy making them stuff.  Recently did a tiered cake for a friend, she threw a huge party for her 13 year old daughter.  When I delivered it, the reactions were well worth the loss of sleep it took to make it!!  So glad to have found this site!!  Great to be able to talk to people who go through the same crazy stuff!!

Brandy, good for you for making cakes for your residents!    I am a retired RN and hobby caker, and thinking of offering to do just that for our local nursing home. I just joined a week ago,  took a class 35 years ago in Normal, Illinois, buttercream.  After making a few cakes with the  buttercream roses drooping into puddles, I kind of gave up.  Fast forward to a year ago when I discovered GUMPASTE!!  I am self taught, love to make orchids, roses, little animals.  Just got a peonie cutter and plan to practice this week.

As far as having lots of equipment, I agree with JJ.  I was lucky I already had a Kitchen Aid mixer, my hubby bought it years ago at Good Will or somewhere.  It is old but works great.  I use my coupon at Joann's to get the glucose and gum tex and make my own gumpaste.  I make my own marshellow fondant too, and everyone loves it!  YouTube is a godsend, the Food Court videos are amazing.  Of course the professionals need a lot more to do their work efficiently, but if you are just getting started you would be amazed at what you already have around the house or things you can get at the dollar store to use as flower formers.  I just did break down and buy a celboard yesterday at sweetwise here in nashville to help with the peonies, but that is my present for my upcoming birthday July 4.

Hi everyone, just joined a few days ago.  Started taking the Wilton courses a few months ago so that I could make cakes for my daughters.  It has grown a little, and I now make cakes for friends and family.  I also work in a Nursing Home, and I bake cakes for my residents.  Their reactions are awesome!

Looking forward to networking with people who are interested in the same thing as I am, hoping to pick up a few tricks and techniques!!

Hi, my name is Lynette. I just joined this site yesterday. I have been a baker, decorator and teacher for over 18 years. During that time I have done everything from melting butter to blown and pulled sugar. I just love everything to do with cake. I enjoy being around people with the same interests - sharing, caring and learning from each other. I am also the organizer of North East PA cake decorators meetup, a group which I recently started before I knew that this group existed. I have recently relocated from New York where I worked in the industry for quite a while. So far, I like what I've seen on this site. I am planning to have a cake decorating show in the summer of 2012 in the North East PA area and hope that many of you will be able to attend and participate. My plans are to have contests at every level (not just professionals), utilizing every medium (buttercream, fondant, royal icing, etc.). Baking and decorating has been my lifelong passion and I hope to have a long, healthy and friendly relationship on Cakes we Bake.
