Hi guys,

i'm interested in trying to bake and decorate cookies, so i was looking for any help, (and i wanted to try tomorrow< lol)

 

here's my specific questions tho

 

1) can all cookie recipes be rolled and cut by cookie cutters then baked, cause i saw i very nice ginger cookie recipe and was wondering if i can roll it then cut it with shaped cutters.

 

2) can i use butter cream n gumpaste/fondant to decorate them

 

Any and all your advise is very welcome!

I don't make cookies but here's what I know...made my last set of cookies while I was studying for my degree at Utech...at least 5 yrs ago...:)

There are different types of cookies like rolled, drop, molded, pressed etc. So all cookies are not rolled it all depends on the cookie I guess and it's respective method.

I would think that you can use both types of icing to decorate your cookies...your BC may need to be of a certain consistency maybe...

You can roll the ginger cookie recipe if it says so...some may just require a little hand molding in terms of shaping into a ball and slightly flatten...others may use the rolling method...

I know you can use fondant for the cookies, but probably a glaze would work better for the icing. I LOVE the sugar cookie recipe by Jeri C - she posted it on the site. The cookies and the icing recipe are wonderful and came out really great. I've done some shower favours using that recipe.

Gingerbread cookies can be rolled and cut, but it is a very sticky dough, so keep that in mind!

Hi Kim,
You need a very dense cookie that will be able to hold up under the fondant. A gingerbread may work but they usually spread and crackel from the molasses so not so sure about using gingerbread. You need a good sugar cookie recipe that uses a large amount of flour. I have 2. One is from WIlton and holds up nice.
I use both buttercream and fondant to decorate cookies for cookie bouquets. But I use piping gel to hold the fondant on the cookies not frosting. The cookie plus frosting plus fondant is usually too sweet. I use the frosting to do outlines, eyes, hair etc but never cover the entire cookie.

oh thanks guys,
i see wilton has the sugar cookie recipe so i will just switch to that (just showing off a lil, i got it int he wilton 2010 yearbook that i just got my hands on n refuse to put it down)! but the thing is i mite not be able to get my hands on any piping gel for tomorrow, that's one of the sucky things about a small caribbean island things are harddd to find! so i guess it will be buttercream to hold the fondant for me, talk about sugar overload.

If you have some gum paste you can use a small amount of warm water (about 1/4 cup) and tear about a gumball size piece and place in the warm water. Let it dissolve(about 1/2 hr) and use a paint brush and paint the fondant and glue it to cookie. Don't saturate the piece just lightly cover or you can also use vanilla. It works great and tastes good.

It is the one that Faith referrd to earlier. This recipe is so basic that you probably have all the ingredients in your cupboard!!! I do have a gingerbread recipe that holds up well under fondant too. I will have to share it too. You can use fondant on cookies but I would not recommend gumpaste. Gumpaste will dry too hard and the cookies will not taste very good. I prefer the icing that is on the recipe above. It dries hard enough so you can stack the cookies but not too hard and tastes soooo good. Hope your cookies turn out wonderful!
hiii guysss well i used jeri c cookie recipe but used buttercream icing, next time i'll do some fondant as this was just practice.

if you can't find piping getl, do you have light corn syrup? that will adhere the fondant to the cookie. i also melted down different flavors of preserves like apricot and raspberry. i strain the pulp and seeds after its heated then brush on the cookie to adhere the fondant.

Nice Job Kim!!! Glad you tried the recipe... did you like the taste of the cookies? I just love this recipe. Our kids bought us a trip to Hawaii and I am making them cookies in tropical shapes to say thank you. I am going to use this recipe but... make it with cocount flavor instead of almond in the cookie and in the icing both. Will let you know how they come out!!! Thought the Coconut flavor would be a nice touch and they all love coconut!
Kim here is a recipe for piping gel:

Piping Gel

The Ingredients
1/2 cup of granulated sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup water

The Method
Combine sugar and cornstarch in a small saucepan, gradually blend in the lemon juice and then the water. Stir over high heat until mixture boils and thickens. Color as desired.

Store the mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month. If it becomes too thick, stir in a tiny amount of water, a little at a time until get reaches a pipeable consistency
