I need to make some royal icing cherries to put on a cake. Since I have never used it before I was wondering if anyone had any pointers or tips. I am not sure what cosistancy it should be or how much coloring to put into it. Anything would be great. Thanks for reading. :)

can't give you a whole lot of advice Amanda, but its gonna take a whole lotta red to get cherry color..start with pink, then add red. Can I ask why royal icing? fondant cherries would be easy to make...but you also might want to consider doing a run out for the cherries..that would be two consistencies...stiff for the outline and thin for the runout. Hope that helps a little.
i agree with sherry. i would use fondant. if you're making them real looking (3D) then i would think that it would be difficult to get the RI to dry solid enough.
I was thinking of trying it out. I don't have any equipment for fondant yet. I've just been working with buttercream. Thank you for the tips.

How would o go about it with fondant? I want to make them 2d. Thanks for your help.
Rather than worry about how much food coloring it will take to make it red (which will change the consistency any way by the time you get a dark red) I would just make the cherries in white, let them dry, then paint them with a mixture of powdered red food color and vodka.
Amamda... if I were making cherries... I would start with already tinted red fondant... Satin Ice is my fav... roll into a small ball the size you want them to be. If you do not have any tools don't worry.. you can use a toothpick and make a small indentation in the top and then use a piece of a toothpick painted with the super black americolor gel for the stem. Red is a very hard color to get with dyes.
Thank you all for your ideas they are very helpful. I was actually going to make them 2d but I decided to go in a different direction with the cake. One of my friends is moving into her own place and the cake is going to say " home, sweet home" on it and have some flowers and leaves. I think that maybe this is a better design for it. What do you all think?
