Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi,

I've been asked to make a Wilton cake from the catalog "Wedding Cake: A Romantic Portfolio", pg. 101. Beautiful cake. Anyway, it requires a Kolor-Flo Fountain ... are those even being sold anymore? The only one I can find on Wilton's site is the Fanci Fountain. Does anyone have information about either of these? And will the Fanci Fountain substitute well, if I can't find the Kolor-Flo?

Michael's has them, too.
Yikes, I hope they are putting up part of the cost of the fountain. Since this is an investment you may never use again, I would definitely incorporate a percentage into the cost of the cake.
Thanks so much! I'll feel better about getting the exact fountain that the instructions recommend ... glad they're still being sold.

Eileen, yes, the couple will definitely being paying a percentage of the cost (a "rental fee"), then a refundable deposit to cover the cost of the equipment, should they either return it damaged or not at all. Honestly, I hate to buy the fountain, because it's not something that's popular anymore, but maybe it'll come back in style someday.

I was 100% certain that I would NEVER accept an order that required anything mechanical, but I think I'm at the place where I can do it now. And I have my techno-nerd, geeky husband to help me. :) He's a genius with electronic/mechanical things.
I f you would rather have the Kolor-flo fountain go to your local AC Moore, Michaels or Party Suppliers store or whichever store in in your area . The Kolor-flo costs more though. The fanci fountain will work just fine. It can be found in these stores as well. That's the one I use.
Thanks, Teresa. Is the Fanci Fountain the same size, do you know?

I had a bride that wanted a fountain last summer and I told her she'd have to purchase it since it is not something that I would ever use again... then I had back surgery and she had someone else do her cake. Fountains are so out of date but every now and then someone just loves the look.. I just don't want to invest in something that I won't ever use again... I have a cake stand that I did that with.. used it once and has never been out of the box again.
Mary Ann you are so lucky that Tim is so talented. Together you two are amazing!!!
I am lucky, Jeri. :) Tim is awesome. It's neat the way we have such different interests, but somehow they come together to accomplish a common goal.

I remember that cake order you were talking about. I think I posted something like, "I would NEVER EVER make a cake with a fountain!" LOL. It doesn't seem intimidating at all now, though. Of course, now that I've given the couple the estimate, I may not have to worry about it. ;)
Teresa J. Smith, does the Fanci Fountain have lighting, btw? Thanks!
Yes the Fanci fountain does have lighting.
Well, the two sound identical, except that the Fanci Fountain doesn't appear to have a thingy that automatically shuts off the fountain if it runs out of water. Can't imagine it would run out in just an afternoon/evening, though.

Everyone's help is appreciated! Thanks so much.
Check with a local rental agency you may be able to rent the fountain. The last cake I did with a fountain the bride rented the fountain. The foundtain was dropped off to me and the bride was responsible for taking the fountain back to the rental agency.

Also, if you choose to buy one make sure that after use the fountain is taken care of properly. If not the fountain might not work when and if you need to use it again.
