I am new to this forum and cupcake business as well. I don't have business license yet and just like most of the bakers around here, I do my home based baking.
I have my fb page http://www.facebook.com/pages/MerryBerry-Cupcakes/230128167004572 where I post pictures and thanks to it, I am getting some orders.
But - not enough.
I did some free cupcakes for school or clinics, I gave free samples to my FB fans - to get people know me and to know what are my cupcakes about.
I do have great feedback. People love my flavors but I don't know what else to do to promote my work better.
I was thinking about special deals for 4th July orders like a cupcake for $1.25 a piece. I normally charge $1.50- 1.75 but I am afraid that after this people would like that price all the time. Also, I wonder if price is the issue. Some people asked me for my price list and when I sent it, I never heard from them again. I don't know, is 1.50 too much to ask?
I don't use shortenings, just real butter, best chocolate and all kinds of better ingredients to make my cupcakes. It takes my forever to make it and sometimes I wonder when I will actually make money on it :)
I really don't know what to do. How did you all start? Any ideas, advices? Thanks.

You're on the right track with just getting your product out there. Facebook has been extremely helpful for me, also get yourself a website and spend plenty of time listing your business on sites like google, yahoo, and yelp.
There's a bank in my shopping center and a few free samples over there had the ladies that work there sending me customers on a weekly basis... word of mouth is invaluable- make friends with the local gossip and get him or her pushing your product.
The other thing that has been great for cup cakes is our cup cake school... we hold classess that groups can sign up for and we do cup cake topping classes. The girl scouts have held a couple of groups with us and those always lead to a ton of business from families. Ask around at local schools, churches, and community organizations offering to sponsor summer activities like cup cake decorating work-shops, etc, or offer your cup cakes for re-sale at their fund raisers. We have a local synagogue that does a fund raiser where they take orders from sunday school families for cup cakes which- we sell it to them for $2.00 each and they re-sell them for $3.
http://www.facebook.com/BeckerBrosBakeshop facebook is great if you use it every day, post frequently- pictures get the most impressions and feedback- this keeps your page from becoming static and keeps you gaining likes. Offer deals when people post on your wall, hold contests...
