How do you paint on fondant and gum paste? or can you?

ok everyone there is something I haven't figured out is how do you paint on fondant or gum paste? I am by no means ready to attack this and it might even be another year before I even do lol. I am just wondering how do you do it? is it hard to do? can you even paint on fondant and gum paste?

yes you can, i haven't yet myself but i believe you mix pearl dust or food coloring, with vodka...someone feel free to correct me if i am wrong

Shanna - painting on fondant and gumpaste is a cinch!! I use the gel food colorings mixed with vodka (cheap vodka works best because the alcohol content is higher and it's the alcohol that allows it to dry quickly). My method is that I use a small, glass bowl. I put about a tablespoon of vodka in the bottom (don't actually measure - just eyeball it), and then rub some of the food coloring on the side with a toothpick. I then dip a clean paint brush into the vodka and then pick up a little of the food coloring and mix it around until it's the thinness I want. I usually have a small piece of scrap fondant to test it on before moving to my main piece. I hope that helps!!

Thanks Eileen and Tracy, I have been wondering does it dry fast? it might be something fun the kids would like to do is paint on a fondant cake. Maybe paint a pic on it can you use the powder? I seen the powder colors before or what is the colors powder colors for?

I've never used the powdered food colors. I do use petal dust for flowers, but that's about it. And the gold highlighter comes as a powder you mix with vodka.
It does dry fast as long as you don't use too much.
One of these days I'll do a simple video on how I paint on fondant. :)

Oh I wish you would if it wasn't for you I would have never learned how to make fondant along with the butter cream etc. I have seen the petal dust with the powder stuff. The gold high lighter is that how they get gold?

Using the colored food coloring is just like using the petal dust. I use it for coloring my buttercream, fondant and for painting. It's typically less expensive then petal dust also.

Hello
I have used the colored jels but prefer the airbrush paints, there much more opaque and do dry fast. I used them to paint the teacup in my photo album. Easy clean up as well if you make a mistake you can use a q tip dipped in a tiny bit of water and it comes right off.

You can do that on fondant and gum paste? I started thinking for fathers day letting my 7 year old paint on a fondant cake for my father in law. I would get the air brush paints? do you mix them with anything else? one more question can I buy these paints anywhere? thanks

It's a powder that comes in a container like the gel. I purchase mine from a box outlet for about $3.00 per pot, you can also find it online on just about every baking website.

Most cake stores carry the airbrush paints.
This stuff, especially after adding the vodka (which you really need to do), dries VERY fast. A minute or so, even less and it's dry.
