Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi everyone!

My sister is getting married and she is having my cousin make her cake.  He is a professional decorator and he works for a bakery that is in all of the local and some of the national wedding magazines called Icing on the Cake in Newton Ma.  Anywho, he is doing the cake for free and my mom really wants to pay him something.  The cake is 5 tiers.  2 chocolate, with choc mousse. 2 vanilla with white choc mousse. 1 red velvet with cream cheese filling.  Frosted in white buttercream and it will have star decor all over it.  not sure if it is royal icing or fondant stars, does anyone know what they would charge for that?  there are 200 people attending the wedding if that helps!

Thanks!

It would really depend on how many the cake serves not how many people are at the wedding I would guess at 5 tiers it serves much more than 200. But wow too have someone offer to do that is amazing that is A LOT of work. A 5 tier serves between 300-350 people. Depending on tier sizes check out the link for sizes servings and an estimated cost

thank you! I know.....My cousin and my sister are so close and he would never charge her for the cake. He said that from day one. I knew a cake that big would feed atleast 300. I can't wait to see the finished product.
Do you think you will be able to post a pic?? I would love to see it too! Sounds like it will be amazing!

That sounds so fantastic! I think a cake for 200 people by a featured cake shop would run at least $400, depending on where you live. That is a great gift! Maybe your mom would like to buy him a gift in exchange for that cake, since he is doing it as a gift for your sister - that way she won't feel obliged to pay him what the cake is worth and he won't be offended if she pays him a sum that is much smaller than what it's worth. Just an idea - and please do post a photo after the wedding!
I defiantely will put it up. I was thinking to send him all expenses paid trip to NYC....He went to culinary school there and has lots of friends there still. He loves to racel so maybe a trip? Who knows! Thanks for the ideas and I will get a pic up right after the wedding.
What a wonderful gift from your cousin! It is a lot of work but I think he would get more joy out of making your sister happy then getting paid for it. I too did a bridal shower set up and offered to make it without being paid. $100 down the drain BUT I may have gotten a few orders for the near future. Although, me being in your mom's shoes, would feel the same as she and would want to pay him for his hard work. PLEASE post pics and good luck to your sister:)
I do cakes often for gifts... yes wedding cakes as well. It is my wedding gift to the bride and groom... not all of my cakes are gifts but I have done them that way for family and makes me feel so great to be able to be a part of their big day and give them an awesome wedding gift as well! I am sure if he has offered he is doing it as a labor of love... what greater gift can someone give?
On the other note... the black wedding cake I did in December served 200 and I charged them $550... but we are in a very small area in the sticks and I can not get the prices that you would in or around a city!
If he wants to give it as a present let him... :) the gift of giving is far better than the gift of recieving
This is exactly what I told my mom. But she is a stubborn Italian woman. Pics to come.!!!!
Professional cakes go for between $5.00 and $15.00 per person...it is customary to charge for the number of guests so the cake would cost a minimum of $1000.00 for 200 people at a bakery for a custom made cake. Your cousin is saving you ALOT of money.
Thank you everyone for your help on this matter. It's great to have the advice of such talented and professional people. I have relayed the info to my mother and she also sends a big thanks!!!!!! 25 days and counting!!!!!!!
This is a great site! Thanks for posting.
