Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

So I have my first wedding cake due next Saturday. I already can't sleep because my brain won't shut off!!

Have any of you covered an 18" round with MMF? I am wondering if you needed more than one recipe to cover it, or if one was enough. I guess I am most worried about not being able to roll it out big enough to cover in one piece.

This is going to be one huge cake!!

The tiers are 6", 10", 14", and 18"

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!! :)

If you add the diameter of the cake, plus 2x the height, it tells you how many ounces of fondant you need to cover the cake. So, if your cake is 4" high, it's 4+4+18=26 ounces.
Holly ~ take a deep breath and if you have to practice on a dummy cake, then do it. Just keep saying to yourself that you can do it. Good luck!
Holly also remember that you need to roll it out 26" The 18" +4" for each side = 26 inches. Do you have an Ateco mat to roll it out on? If not... pick up a large piece of vinyl from WalMart and use cornstarch to keep it from sticking. I do not think the Ateco mat will be large enough. I don't use MMF I only use Satin Ice so can't help there! I live not far from you so let me know if you need anything! I can't roll fondant right now because of my back but can be here in support for you!
Holy hell!! I had trouble inviting 100 people to my wedding... LOL. Here you have a cake that will serve over 250!! That's going to be one heck of a party with all those people.

You will most likely need more than one recipe to cover that 18" tier. Rolling it out isn't as bad as lifting the fondant. Make sure you have help!!! Once the fondant is over the cake it's easy though. =]
LOL Jeanne!! yeah, I only had 45 people at my wedding!! She is expecting about 240, so we went with this! Unfortunately I won't have help lifting it on to the cake, my husband picked a HORRIBLE week to have to work 6 hours away, but thankfully I have my mom to take my kids the day I will be doing the covering and decorating!
Jeri, you are so sweet!! I would love to meet you some time, your cakes are very inspiring!! Too bad you don't have a sheeter, I would come over and use it!!! LOL! I was just gonna roll it on my table dusted with cornstarch, I never thought about a piece of vinyl... I might just have to go get some! Would it be in the fabric section?
Praying the weather cools a bit by next Saturday also, it will be 96 today, the wedding is outside at 4pm and the cake will be under a tree.... :|
Yes they do have it in the fabric section on that big deal where the vinyl table cloth stuff is. You can just pick up the sheet of vinyl and flip it over onto your cake. Much easier than trying to move it!!! Are you just doing an 18" round or I assume it is a stacked cake... you could go a little smaller on the bottom and make it taller... not sure what you are doing though. Will an 18" pan fit into your oven? That is a big pan!
Where is the wedding at? Hope the weather does cool down some but as long as it is in the shade you should be ok.
Thankfully I thought of the oven depth, and no an 18" won't fit, so I bought 2 18" half rounds and will have to bake 4.. ugh!
The tiers are 6, 10, 14, and 18! We decided on this several months ago, before I had very many cakes under my belt! Had I though better, I would have done maybe a 3 tier and 2 2 tier satelite cakes. OH, well!! It will look gorgeous anyway!! :)
The wedding is about 8 miles east of Bend.
The 16-14-10-8-6 serves 240 and would be easy too but sounds like you already have it all figured out. I am sure it will be perfect! Is the wedding at a private residence of at a venue? I deliver a lot of cakes to the Bend area and it is such a shame that alot of the venues in this area have been shut down due to the land use fight. Our daughter got married out at Aspen Hall a few years ago. I love that place. It is so pretty out there.
Let me know if you need anything!
It is at the bride's grandparents ranch. So do you live in Redmond?

Actually I am in Prineville. But a lot of people that live here get married in either Bend or Redmond. Not many options here in Hooterville!
LOL!!
