Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I'm building a cake next week and need to get started on the flowers today. I was wondering if anyone has a good working ratio for gumpaste/ fondant to use for flowers for the optimal results. I look forward to hearing from all  you talented cakers!!! Thanks

It all depends on what kind of flowers you want to make.  If you are making flat or 2-D type flowers that will be stuck to the cake or if you going for more artistic interpretation of flowers, then fondant alone would work.  The more stable you want the flowers to be when standing away from the cake, the more stiff they need to be which would necessitate adding something to the fondant.  A medium range is 50/50 ratio gum paste and fondant.  I add tylose powder to fondant in order to achieve this state.  However, the fondant or fondant/gumpaste (or tylose added) mix is not going to enable you to roll it to almost paper thin nor achieve really good results if you are wanting to wire the petals.  To achieve that state you need to use gum paste alone such as the one in my avatar picture which is a gum paste rose I made last weekend.  Hope this helps you!

Thanks Janet, a huge help really and your rose is beautiful.... thank you  so much I'll be posting pics of the flowers soon!! Thanks again!!!
