Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi everyone, I have a question about fondant. I'm going to be making some cut outs and I was wondering how far in advance I can make them, they will be wired and some will stand on the cake. Thanks

Sherrie, you actually want to make your fondant decos a few days in advance to let them set up. You can make them a week ahead of time...just make sure that while setting up you keep them covered with paper towel or tea towel (something breatheable)
Just make sure you insert the wires before you dry them :D
Hey Sherrie, if you need the cutouts to be hardened then i would add gumpaste to it. When it dries it becomes hard, and it can also then stand on the cake.
ho\\How much gumpaste do I add, half and half? Does the fondant not harden on it's own without the gumpaste? I am doing a NYC themed cake and I do need the pieces to harden. Thank you everyone for your input

You can do up to half and half..yes fondant hardens but if you place it on the moist cake it will soften more than gumpaste. Adding gum paste will make it stronger and hold shapes better like bows. But you dont want to eat it...gumpaste is not palatable...non toxic and edible technically..but yucky :D Also fondant nver really gets rock hard...gumpaste does.

I like to just add tylose powder to the fondant too because you don't lose the color. I have mixed gumpaste with the fondant before and seems like I get a lighter color than I need. I just did a cake and needed the purple bow to match the cake top and just added the tylose powder and it worked great. I try to do my decorations a week or two in advance... makes the week of actual assembly go so much smoother. If they need to air dry and be hard, I use the spatter screens that you get for a fry pan and then set them on top of something where the air can circulate around the pieces that are drying. I have 2 of them just for my gumpaste things and I love using them to dry things on.
I've never used tylose before, how much do you add to the fondant? I've been doing cakes for years, but am just now getting into the fondant and gumpaste.
I never measure it... I just sprinkle some on and mix it in. It does make the fondant harden like gumpaste. I guess about a tsp in a couple inch ball maybe??? It is just a powder. I have a bit of shortning on my hands and it helps the tylose mix into the fondant better. Works great!
