Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I work at a small mom and pop restaurant.... yesterday my boss' wife calls me and says,
' I have a friend who would like a lion shape cake for her daughters birthday...would you be interested in making it for her? I would be happy to send her your way if you five me a cut of what you make off of the cake.'
My first thought was, do I ask for a cut from you every-time my friends come into your restaurant or make you a special dessert other then what is on the menu????  (I was HOT)
But then I thought maybe that was a bad attitude and I should ask some other people what they think.
So PLEASE correct me if my attitude is wrong? And if I am wrong?  How much would you give as a finders fee...10%?

Thanks!

You know what? If it were a caterer or something like that, I'd expect to pay a finder's fee, but your bosses wife should do it just because you're a great employee. Maybe others will disagree with me, but I thinks she's a piece of work.
Theresa is right. Dont give her a dime. If you loose the client probably was not worth having anyway.
I agree with Theresa and Tracey. If she sent her friend to a local bakery she wouldn't get a cut. What a piece of work!
You should be HOT! That's not cool, and she should know better.
Theresa,
Please help me to understand how the business world works, I really want to do the right thing with this matter or situation..
So why would you expect a finders fee if it were a caterer or anything else?
As far as it being my boss...I agree! I have been with them 12 years making desserts and basically being their right hand in everything! I have gone YEARS without a raise, and then have to threaten to get a dollar! I am not asking for one now even though it is coming on years since my last, because I understand the economic times. (that is another argument) ANYWAY....thanks everyone for advise and support.
I love this site and everyone on it!

If you were to go to a band, florist, or other service that a wedding hall referred you to, it is a standard practice that they receive a kick back for making the referral. So, if you approach wedding related businesses, they're going to send people your way because there is something in it for them. But, you'll make more money on a wedding cake than a birthday cake, so it's worth it.

I'd tell that woman, "Oh, I didn't know how this was done. I wish I knew, because I've referred so many people to this restaurant." I think she'll get the hint.

Get your butt out of that job!!!
I wouldn't give her anything! I can't believe she asked for a referral fee. She must have some cake balls on her!

I have one customer (my first outside of family and friends) who I offered a discount on her future cakes for each person she referred to me. Not each cake - each new customer. BUT, that was my offer - not her request.

Thanks again everyone for helping me.
I am really praying that God will open a new door for me so I can close this one behind me without breaking any bridges.
Maybe she'll just fall off the bridge.
I agree totally with everyone's remarks. It sounds like you should go on your own. Have you ever thought about it? You do make deserts for the restaurants and maybe you should be putting the money into your own pocket. Tell your boss you appreciate that she's referring you to someone but you cannot afford to "5" anyone because it's difficult to make ends meet as it is now. Good luck ~ we all have your back:)
