Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

So after seeing several pictures of beautifully decorated dessert tables, I realized how many baby showers, bridal showers, etc. that I have been to where cake is the only dessert and sometimes is not what I want, so I skip. It got me thinking about dessert tables, actually, thinking about opening a business that only caters to dessert tables. I would offer custom design to the client's theme and even help to develop one if needed. I would also do set up and rent out any stands, vases, trays, etc. I would offer several varieties of treats, including cake, but instead of a cake with several tiers I would offer several cakes of different flavors. Does anyone think that a business like this, ONLY doing dessert tables would be lucrative?

It would depend on the area you would cater for Jackie.  But I did read an article recently (can't remember where sorry), that said that dessert tables were becoming increasingly popular.  I have to say, when I do a big family dinner for an occasion, I always am the one that makes the cake, but do like to make a second dessert as well, so that everyone gets a choice.  Not everyone always wants cake (although with my lot it usually ends with most people having some of each lol!)

That is kind of what inspired this idea, I don't always want the cake and actually, at the past couple baby showers I didn't eat any, where I live most people get store bought sheet cakes and while those are edible, I prefer a better quality and choices.

I would offer an array of different sweets, all freshly made and decorated to match the party theme. I picture a table with several different choices and different cakes, rather then stacking the cakes, let them stand on their own.

I had someone suggest theme packages, like chocolate lovers, pastry plates, etc. I would have a kid's themed one as well. I'm still working on prices. I do not foresee a lot of start up or overhead costs since I'd be making the treats from my kitchen (Missouri has a cottage food law) fresh for each event. All I would need to purchase would be the cake stands, trays and any serving item that can't be thrown away.

I'd help the client with pulling their theme together and making a focal point out of the dessert table, with a backdrop and all.

I guess my next step will be to ask around and see if anyone would be interested in something like this.

Sounds like a great idea - something I would have love to have done myself, as I am a keen dessert maker too.  You do need to do plenty of research as you say, to make sure there is a market for it.  Drop some flyers into to mailboxes in your area and follow up a few days later to see what the response is like.  Ask friends, colleagues if they would go for that if it were available, that sort of thing.

I wonder if being more targeted would work better and market it as afternoon tea. Then you could add a few savouries along with the mouthfuls of sweets.
