Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I've spent hours trying to figure out what type of wire to use for cakes. You know the kind that has stars "bursting" out of the top, or flowers or beads hanging off. I'm assuming you can just stick any kind of hardware store wire into a cake. Is there some kind of 'food safe' wire. I've googled and been searching for weeks. PLEASE can anyone help? :(

I read somewhere that you are not supposed to stick the wire directly into the cake, but it didn't say why or if there was a food safe wire. I do know though that the new Duff line at Micheal's has the curved cute wire for exactly what you are talking about!
Here's a couple of examples of the wire I mean. It LOOKS like its stuck right into the cake?

Another thing to keep in mind is that on a lot of these "display" cakes, the top tier is not cake at all - it's styrofoam - so it may actually be stuck directly into the top tier. :)

I loved that discussion on Cakecentral though - the idea with the coffee stirrers is money!
I also had this question. I stopped at the local fancy cake place here in town to buy some petal dust. I asked the owner how she does it. She said she wraps the wire around the cardboard lollipop sticks then covers with floral tape. I've done this on my last couple of "explosion" cakes and it seems to work just fine. I had issues with sticking the wire directly into the cake, too. I use the green floral wire that comes in like 16" lengths from the floral dept. at Walmart. It's fine enough to slide into thin gumpaste without showing through too badly.
Thanks for all the tips and advice, I shoulda asked much sooner! :)
The floral wire works really well it is the only way I have found to cover the wire.
Jenifer - I happen to know from reading a discussion on cake central that Pink Cake Box inserts wires directly into the cakes, no covering at all. You'll find a lot of people do this but just as many don't. It tends to be a hot discussion when both sides take a stand.

My recommendation - insert a coffee stirer in the cake and then insert the wire in the stirer or use a straw if you are placing multiple wires in the same spot. I won't disagree with the floral tape idea but I wouldn't do it. Floral tape isn't intended for food so I my preference would be not to use it just like I wouldn't use floral foil for my cake boards.

I have a friend who makes orthodontic appliances - fancy name for retainers. I'm going to purchase wires from her to use in my cakes. I figure if you can put it in your mouth you should certainly be able to put it in a cake.
Yes, I tend to think twice about sticking things into edible items. That link I posted above too, also suggested a flower pick filled with fondant. I think I like that better than the coffee stick even as the wire won't be able to slide around, it'll stay put wherever I stick it. Plus I only have to poke one (albeit larger) hole and have my "burst" coming out of the center.
You guys are great! I love this site! :)
hey that's a good idea!

I have used floral wire before but you can get the type you are talking about already pre-cut and ready made by Duff of Cake Boss. Which I am sure has already taken the food safe aspect in mind.

I found it being sold at Michaels Craft Store.
hi, i get mine from my local sugarcraft store but you can also get them from sugarcraft suppliers online, they should not be stuck directly into a cake thats going to be eaten so i usually set mine into posy pics with a bit of spare sugarpaste to hold them, plastic food safew posy pics are also available from the same suppliers, hope that helps.
