Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am new to decorating cakes (actually I have only done 2) my cakes stick to pan? I use shortening and flour to inside of Wilton 9" cake pans. Would it be better to spray w/ non-stick spray? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. TIA Debbie :)

I make my own pan release........works great and you just brush it on after you make it! I mix it in my kitchenaid mixer. I usually mix 1 cup crisco, 1 cup flour, 1 cup veg. oil. Mix til fluffy and well combined!!! It keeps for a long time in a air tight container.
I am with Tanisha, that pan release is the best. It has never left any cake in the pan. Cheaper then buying any cake  release, this homemade one works great, worth a try Debbie.

I actually don't use any flour in my pans.  I just spray them with non-stick spray (Pam) and put parchment paper on the bottom (ALWAYS!).  I've never had any stick.  I bake my cake, set it on a rack to cool for 10 minutes.  Run a sharp, thin knife around the outside and then flip quickly.  If you want it to cool "dome side up", you can just put another rack on top of the cake and flip again.

The only exception to this is bundt pans.  Then I use non-stick spray and flour - a LOT of flour!!

Also - if you are using a metal flower nail in large pans to help them bake more evenly - spray that with Pam as well, then poke it up through the parchment paper into the pan before pouring the batter in.  Works like a charm and is simple to remove after the cake is baked!

Welcome to cake decorating!  It's an addiction!

I'm with Tanisha and Sharon.  Nothing like some pan goop!

Thank for the great tips! I will have to try making my own pan goop lol!! Wish me luck :) Debbie
