Depends if you are thinking about a computerised system or a paper based one?  There are some very good small accounting packages for the computer available - but if you are just starting out a small paperbased system is sufficient.  Keep one sheet to track the sales and another sheet to track the expenses.  I would always advise asking the accountant you are going to submit your annual accounts to, how he/she would like the paperwork done.  It is by far better to submit the papers - exactly how the accountants are expecting them, as this will work out cheaper in the long run.  Hope that helps.

I use QuickBooks Pro.  $99.  Worth every penny.  I keep all my expenses on it - home and business.  I just make sure I class it properly. And I can cost things to certain customers.  Makes it so nice.  If I do several cakes over one weekend, I can merge those jobs cause costs are kind of merged, and still know if I made money or not overall.

 

I love it for personal, also.  I didn't realize I had spent so much money on craft materials until I ran a report.  Made me slow down a lot.  i have everything coded separately.  Car washes, groceries, meals out, haircuts, everything.  It has helped us so much on controlling our spending and we actually  have cash in savings now.

At the end of the year I print out a report or two and hand to my accountant for taxes.  It even has a place to enter mileage.

 

There is a cheaper home and business version -but it didn't give me all the reports I needed for the CPA.  My CPA costs dropped considerably, too.  Worth the $99 in that alone.

 

It has a payroll program attached to it.  I just don't use it.  You only need to upgrade yearly if you use payroll.  If not, whatever year's version you buy it's good forever.  If you decide to go with it - I can give you some tips to make it so much easier to use and get the most out of it.

i use cake boss software. its great and for me i need dummy proof and its great. does the math for me.

its $149 and my sister in lay who lives in another state went in on it with me and we were able to share the program

Can you ulegally share this program?  Does it have a two user license agreement?  Most software does not.  Be careful with saying this out loud.

If you're only looking for a blank general journal to print out, Microsoft Word has a template you can use. They do sell ledgers, but really you can make one easily with a notebook or composition book and a ruler.

Just wondering if this software calculates the price of icing and fondant use per cake? Do you just plug in numbers and it calculates it?  Also do you have to pay for new versions of the software or is it free?
