I am going to attempt to make a black bear standing up on his hind legs. I've never made a cake standing like this so need a little advise. My plan is to use some kind of rods screwed into a wood base board for the legs. I'll put rice krispy treats around rods to build up legs then cover in fondant or modeling chocolate. on top of the rods I want to mount a cake board and then the body and head will be stacked and sculpted cake. I am going in the right direction and any suggestions on material to use for supports and how to assemble? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I would use PVC pipes for the legs, which you can attach to the board using a flange (sp??) to fit the size pipe you are using, then form the feet right on top of them to cover them up.. The pipe works great - very sturdy and comes in lots of different diameters. Then you can fit another flange up on top of each leg and screw the base right onto those. I get my materials at the local Menards, you should be able to find them at any store that sells plumbing equipment. Plus, you'll get the funniest looks when you tell them it's not for a home improvement project - it's for a cake! Good luck!!
Thanks so much Joann!! I think I'll go that route.
Good luck!!
Here is what I came up with for stand just in case anyone else might be curious
