Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hello all,

I have a very dear friend that has a daughter, Rachel, she is 16 years old.  While I was in Utah visiting their family 3 weeks ago, they took her to the ER for severe headaches after playing LOTS of volleyball with her club team.  They were getting ready for Nationals and holding a childrens volleyball camp!  She went to the ER Saturday afternoon and that night was ambulanced to Salt Lake Primary Childrens Hospital after being diagnosed with Leukemia!

Sad she was missing all the things a 16 year old is involved in, but so ready to get through this fast!

She has been diagnosed with AML Leukemia.  This is a very aggressive type.  She will be in the hospital until December only going home every 4 or 5 weeks fir a week at a time IF her numbers are where they want them!

Her family is blessed to have good insurance, but I am sure the day to day costs are going to be stressful.  I live in Colorado.  Before I left their home Their son, Rachel's brother and I made a blog for everyone to keep in touch with her!

Coming home to Colorado I have felt that I don't know how to help!!  THEN I HAD THIS IDEA!!

Has anyone ever done a bake sale SO BIG that could have all donations go to someone like Rachel??  I am thinking that if even half of us on CakesWeBake had a bake sale for a few hours, on the same day, we could give them a little pocket money to make their time a little less stressful!

A nationwide bake sale put on by Cake people like us, and made club Volleyball teams!!

Please send me any ideas on this thought!  I am thinking it would be in August at this point.

I would open an account for her family if that is the best way to do it!

I can't wait to hear from you all!!

Rachel's blog is www.steelestrong.blogspot.com

my email is rochelleaw5@gmail.com

I have changed the look of my cake blog as I have dedicated it to her!  IT ISA LOT OF ORANGE!!

Thanks for any help or ideas you may have!

I think this is what we are here for, to share our talents with those in need!

Can't wait to hear what you all have to say,

Shelley

I am surprised I am not getting any response to this post!! I am really wanting to have a nation wide bake sale to help Rachel and her family.
Is there anyone in the Cakeswebake community that would be willing to advise me or help me in any way?
Please let me know. I just feel that I don't have any other talent...baking is what I do so I thought it would be my way to help!
Rachel is now getting started on her 2nd round of chemo. She has lost all her hair, and has been told she must have her bone marrow transplant either Sept or Oct.
I would be so grateful for your input!
Thanks again, Rochelle
Hi Rochelle
I just read this... I have not been on here as much since my back surgery. I just looked at Rachel's blogspot... what an inspiration. I want to visit with our high school coach and see if our high school team would be interested in doing this. Our high school team is 4 time Oregon State Champions and they are usually a great group of girls. I know they have to fundraise just to have sports this year again... the budget cuts took out all sports in our high school so there are fundraisers every weekend going on just to keep the sports programs going. I don't know if they would have time or not as I know their schedule is tight but we might be able to pull something off at a high school game once the season begins. I run the clock for all the jv and varsity home games just because I like going to watch the kids play.

I will do some checking and get back with you. I am booked solid in August. I go back to work at school on the 11th and have cakes almost every weekend so August would be out for me but maybe we could pull something off in Septmeber. I will let you know.

A few years ago we had a 6th grade girl who had brain cancer and Katie and I were very close buds. She made it for a year and a half before she passed away. It was one of the most trying times but Katie taught me so much about caring and compassion. Her mom is my hair dresser now and I just love them.
Hi Rochelle

My heart goes out to Rachel and her family and what a wonderful friend they have in you!! I think you have hit on a wonderful idea. You may want to at least start by contacting your local high schools and all the high schools in and around where Rachel lives to see if any of their sports teams might want to sponsor a bake sale, every journey begins with a single step and it might be easier to start at a manageable level, but these things have a way of snowballing...I would try to get her story out to as many people as possible, and I don't want to be a rainer on the parader, but please don't be discouraged if at first may not be what you would like it to be, people are funny about giving money when it is a stranger asking, but with that said, God has his hand in all things and he knows the desire of your heart. Also you may want to contact your state chapter and the state chapter in the state she lives in to see like this one

I am going to contact our local high school sports director and see if there is anything we can do. Will be praying that this is a great success.

Sent a note to our Volleyball coach and will see what they come up with... I think it would be more special coming from another team instead of me!!! Our team competes at the same tournament in Reno every summer so I am sure they are aware of it. There is a common tie among athletes. Hope we can get something together.
