Has anyone had success painting on smooth buttercream, with
icing colors.

I have airbrushed buttercream, but not brush painted. What are you making?
I have been asked to paint trees on a cake. I can air bursh, but they don't want that. The cake they found is done in Fondant, and they don't want fondant and I don't do fondant either. Thanks for replying to my question.

Maybe you could try cutting the trees out in white fondant, applying them to the cake, allow them to dry and then paint on top of that.
I think you could use the same technique I did with the fondant on buttercream.
do you have a picture of what the client wants done so that everyone can make a better assessment of what you are trying to achieve?
I'll see if I can get it on here. It's basically a fondant cake with tree branches painted on the sides. I want to know if I can paint on buttercream, if anyone has done it successfully.
If you have a pic, right up at the top as you are typing in the reply to the discussion, there is that little menu bar where it starts with link, then pic, video, etc. If you could, you can direct us to the link or add a pic right there.

Wasn't sure if I had uploaded the picture or not, but I did. The other cake I hand painted was the Maxine Cake with the bra laying on it. Hope this helps :)
