I have just found that I can make fondant roses!  Woo Hoo  It was one of those things I assumed I couldn't do well so I never tried. LOL  I have a wedding cake this weekend that has fondant roses cascading down the side. But, the bride doesn't want fondant icing - only butter cream.  All the roses are made but seem extremely heavy compared to simple fondant appliques. 

My question is this: How do you attach your fondant roses to butter cream on a vertical surface?

My first thought was to use toothpicks and/or wire and build up from the bottom letting the weight of the top roses rest on the bottom like bricks?

I'd love a fool proof way but in the cake business....I know that's impossible! ;)

hi i've never do it, are your roses on wires inside the cone, one thing your flowers shouldn't be to heavy, i made a lot, and realized i wasn't rolling my circles thin enough, i also use 50/50 fondant/gumpaste dries faster and are a lot lighter. go to cake central they are so helpful and i've seen many posts on this, just post a new one that picture is beautiful.
Thanks Diane! I had read somewhere about the 50/50 mixture. I'll try that this evening. I'll try thinning my petals a little more too. I started making the roses based off some instructional video on youtube. Loved that the girl didn't use special cutters. I'm pleased with the look - I was just worried about the weight. I do not have them on a wire but they are drying on a toothpick.

my first thought was....and believe me I may be way off base....but what about running a fondant "snake" down the cake surface where you want to place the roses, the you could possible just attach with water of gumpaste glue or toothpics...
You have to be very careful not to have the roses too heavy. I had done a wedding cake with the fondant swag coming down the side on buttercream frosting and it turned out beautiful - but when the bride got to the reception at her house that swag had pulled down the whole half side of the cake.Try to make the roses a little more lite weight if possible. I have done another cake with the roses and petunias cascading down the side and they did good but they were not as heavy as that swag for the first cake.
your welcome, i watched a lot of video's on making the roses, i chose the circle one, this works best for me, one good thing to do i take your wire and bend it over a little at the top and then put it in the cone, making your cone's ahead of time is good to,
After using a 50/50 mix the roses were much lighter. I ended up only using the toothpick they were made on. It's not quite as polished as the original but for $2 a serving - I think it turned out great!
