Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am making a baseball cap for my stepson for his birthday, in the colours of his football team - Queens Park Rangers, so blue and white.  I really want to try to imitate one of their badge logos onto the front of the cap, but need advise as to the best way to go about it.  I've put a picture of the logo below and you can see it's quite tricky as it's going to be fairly small - about 2 inches.  I daren't paint it straight on to the cake icing in case I mess it up, so I want to make a plaque that I can stick on the front or peak at the end.  I thought about making a stencil and then painting over it, but that just won't work as the lettering is too small to cut out.  So I think I will have to freehand it (scary as I am partially sighted!).  If I do that, is it best to let the plaque dry and harden first?  Or does anyone have any better ideas?

Thanks Jackie - that's good to know.  Your stuff looks really great and I see you are in the UK.  Whereabouts are you?

I've only just read this post otherwise I could have printed you the edible image for it. I have my own edible image printer and can print anything for you on either A4 or A5 icing sheets. If you need anything printing in the future, let me know, my prices are more reasonable than many online sellers.

OK - cool thanks

Dear Katy...there are a few ways of doing this logo:

1.  You can print it as an edible logo using edible ink and edible paper.  There are some office printers compatible with edible ink cartriges.  I use a CANON MX 870 that automatically cleans it's head and makes it safe for edible ink to be placed without cross contamination.  I get my edible paper and ink from www.LUCKS.com.  Do keep is mind if you use a local printer they should use edible ink on the edible paper, otherwise it is crosscontaminated and not food safe.

2.  You can use a NON TOXIC marker on fondant or gumpaste to create your logo.  If you want help tracing the exact logo, I always suggest making a deep outline unto "parchment paper", placing the parchment paper over your piece of fondant or gumpaste, roll over it until you leave the impression, lift and follow with exacto knife or with NON TOXIC marker.

Hope this helps!  Happy Baking!

Hey Karen - that deep parchment paper idea is a good one, thanks.  I have done the badge now, but will remember this for next time.  Can't imagine why I didn't think of it really - a simple but effective way of doing things.   I always like to do things myself, rather than the edible paper way as I feel it's sort of cheating....

I agree :-)....I use the parchment apper all the time.  Hope it helps!  I did learn from a teacher to use a pencil #2, which is NON TOXIC to draw lightly and them follow with the color.  She used it to draw on parchment, then she would place the pencil side on the cake, smooth over with the fondant smoother, leave the impression, and then trace with color or edible NON TOXIC marker.  All safe!  Hope it helps!

I would suggest using an edible image so the logo stays true. This will save you a lot of time and I think it will look more professional.  If you only need one 2" image I would be happy to produce it for you and get it in the mail asap, no charge. Just let me know if I can be of assistance. www.fillsyourheart.com  eatphotos@yahoo.com

Thanks for this!  I have done the image now (hand painted with reasonable success), but will check out your site for future occasions.  Thanks again.
