Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

So today me and the family took a trip to the craft store Michaels. And I have been talking to the husband about wanting to get into baking n decorating cakes and cup cakes.... so he said... go grab some things with the spending limit of $50.00 =( hahaha Being as Im brand-spanking new I picked up a piping bag, a few tips n a couple other things. When I got home I put some cup cakes in and went to town. I am very proud of my work for being new.... I will post pictures in a few minutes once my 2 month old falls asleep =) Today was a good day =)

Any tips/hints to do better would be great!! Thanks

-Samantha

You did GOOD! This is how you get started. Keep up the good work and ask hubby to pay for some Wilton classes for your birthday. (they might have them at Michal's or a local cake supply store.

good job Samantha!!!!!!!!...until you are able to get into some classes take advantage of internet videos...Edna's videos on youtube.com are fantastic...http://www.youtube.com/user/tonedna1

there are also alot of other great videos on there just search for cake decorating. To help keep costs down for practicing...stick to box mixes, you can usually find these on sale for 99 cents or less. And study study study how to make buttercream....it makes all the difference in decorating. and above all don't get frustrated...remember it is supposed to be fun!!!!!!!!!
Well done Samantha and congratulations on your anniversary!!!

Samantha,
Sherry says it all. I can tell you she is telling you the truth! Classes are not in my budget (priority really) but the videos that have been shared here like Edna and SeriousCakes will really encourage you in a very positive and fun manner. There are a lot of other videos here too besides these two ladies and they all are absolutely wonderful. That is how I started and CONTINUE to have my fun! I watch all of the videos here on our wonderful site. They are all so inspiring and FUN!
Another way in which you can practice your decorating and save some dollars and Calories (lol) is to turn a pot upside-down and practice (I learned that on SeriousCakes!). Many videos share their recipes and how with a video too! That way you can see it and do the same thing as you watch and make. I did that with Sherry's MMF and SeriousCakes' Buttercream and Edna's Bows! Gosh, who needs classes when we have so many talented people here who want to share?
Thank you everyone!!!!

Welcome to this wonderful wacky world of cake decorating! It is very addicting to say the least. I started over 30 years ago and my hubby did the same thing everytime a reason to get me something he'd tell me to get cake supplies if that is what I wanted. So I'd buy a few things each time. Waaayyyy back then there was not anthing like the internet so I'd buy the Wilton yearbook every year and spend hours reading their directions and wishing kind of like a kid with the Sears Toy Catalog at Christmastime!!! I put it all on the back burner while our kids were growing up as I was coaching softball for 25 years and we had 4 kids who were all athletes and I was just too busy with all thier activities to keep up with cakes on a serious level. I have gotten back into it with a passion since all of our kiddos are gone from home. Now... with 3 of them married, I have been able to do all of their wedding cakes and have one more next summer.... and am starting on b'day cakes for the grand kids etc. It is just so much fun to see the joy on thier faces when I come up with a new design. I have NEVER taken a class of any kind just learning everything I can on the internet. I have a lot of DVD's so I guess my own home is my classroom and it is nice to have the DVD's because you can go back and watch them again if it is something you have not done for awhile.... so be sure you take advantage of all the free informatin out there and save your $$$ for cake toys!!!!
Great job Samantha and congrats on your anniversary
