I really need to know if I can knead pearl or shimmer dust into fondant to make the fondant glittery. Im doing a three tierd cake and really dont want to have to sit around and paint the whole thing with my pearl dust. has anyone ever done this and had good results??

I've never done it but I really don't think it will work.  Try a small amount and see what happens.

It doesn't take much to "paint" pearl dust onto fondant.  You'd probably use alot less than kneading it in, besides, I think it would just incorporate into the fondant and you wouldn't see it anyway.   Use a high % alcohol like clear vodka and a wide brush to limit the amount of brush strokes that might be visible.  You'll be done before you know it, doesn't take that long at all.

does not work :(

use something like this and its so fast just brush it on

If you have an airbrush, that would be my suggestion. Quick and uniform. If not, there are spray cans of pearl that you can purchase.http://www.globalsugarart.com/product.php?id=20036&name=Lustre%...

PME makes a fantastic aresol luster spray in Pearl. Wilton also makes one that is less expensive but is not as sparkly. I use these and love them.

I agree with vodka mixed with the dust. I mix it and then airbrush it, but I've also used a paint brush and painted it on. It's very quick either way. The vodka evaporates and leaves you a beautiful even coat of shimmer.

I dry brush the pearl dust on a lot of my cakes and it works fantastic.  Get one of the big fluffy brushes from a hobby supply place... one like a giant blush brush works great.  I put a little pearl dust into a small plastic bowl and get some on the brush then tap it off then very gently tap the cake to get the dust going... then just lightly brush and it turns out soooo pretty.  You can purchase the pump brush too but this method works just as good.  Just be ready for the dust to get a little all over the place!!!  Do not have any fans on or doors or windows open when you are dusting your cake... it will blow all over the place.  I have taken them out on the patio on a still day and dusted them outdoors to keep the dust out doors because it can be messy.
