Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I was very excited to see a Cricut Cake class offered, but saw that it was $500.  The class is actually more expensive than the Cricut Cake itself, and before I commit to spending that much money I wanted to know if it's actually worth it.

Has anyone taken any classes by Cutting Edge Cake Art?

Here's the link to the actual class:  http://www.cuttingedgecakeart.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=23&a...

I am not sure if the online class is still going, but I went to that link and it just says "next live recording: Cricut cake class" and doesn't do anything else...???

I didn't find the class terribly helpful.  I wish they would have talked more about the functions and settings on the machine, rather than what to do with the gumpaste  pieces after they are cut out.

I noticed at Hobby Lobby the other day that ALL the CriCut supplies/tools were on clearance....had me wondering why.

I thought that class was a joke.  Those girls weren't very experienced and the quality of the video was horrible.  If you really want to learn how to use that machine I highly recommend the class on DVD by Linda McClure.  I believe the cost is $75 and it's worth every penny.  She invented the method and taught those that are trying to give classes.  Her DVDs take you step by step through the process and comes with a printed manual and a CD of beautiful designs (if you have MTC).  I took Linda's class and have her DVDs and wouldn't trade them for anything.  If you have MTC or SCAL DONT update them or the firmware on your cricut.  Provo Craft has sued both of them and once you update you will no longer be able to use them with the machine.  Here's a link to Linda's site to order the DVDs http://www.deseretdesigns.com/custom_1.html

what is MTC or SCAL???  you were right too that class was  a joke.....it was like watching Barbie and Skipper...LOL I will definetly cheeck out those videos..

Thank

MTC and SCAL are software programs that allow you to cut images from the internet or other images you may have so you aren't limited to using only cricut cartridges.  The laswuit agains SCAL isn't final yet so it's still available to use but MTC has already had to change their software and can no longer be used (as of 3/16/11).  I didn't update mine so it's still usable.  You can download a trial version of SCAL and try it out, just do a google search.

my came with a dvd on how to use it, even though I have it sitting in top of the shelves for over a year or so.

The DVD that comes with machine isn't much help.

I personally would get the machine Linda Maclure uses. Those cricut cartridges are ridiculously high and with the other machine you can use SCAL, which allows you to use images off the internet as much as you want. I do not want to pay $50-$60 per cartridge, on top of the cost of the cricut cake.

Thanks I bought one but i didn't use yet..I will sign up for the class.

Thanks , i try to find where i need to register in the web but i didn't find...i will try after

Thank goodness someone recently told me about the Silhoutte.  I wrote a post about an intricate monogram, & someone suggested it.  It was expensive (350 from Linda includes how to use it with gumpaste, delivery, tylose, & some icing sheets.

Forget the cartridges!  They are too expensive & limited.  The silhouette will import jpgs, pdfs, you name it!  No question for me.  I justified the initial cost on what I will save not buying cartridges.
