Hey there!! I was unsure as to where to put this post, so if it is in the wrong place, please correct me. =]
I am making a cake for Mother's Day for my mom, and instead of puchasing pre-colored fondant, I bought white to shade the fondant myself. I usually use Wilton's fondant, and that is what I have now.
My question is, if I use basic gel food coloring, will this work okay? Also, will buttercream icing be okay to use to stick fondant to fondant? (example, I am making flowers out of fondant and wanted to put them on the side after the base fondant is set.)
Any help, ideas and suggestions are very much welcomed-this is the first attempt at making a cake completely on my own, and I'm hoping this turns out as wonderful as it looks in my mind and on paper. Haha!!
Wilton gel colors will work for tinting your fondant. That is what I use also. To stick you fondant to fondant paint a little water on the back of the flower and place it on the base fondant. Don't use too much water or you will end up with a sticky mess. Only enough to see a little shine on the fondant.
Awesome, thank you so much!! I had no idea just water would do the trick, and I just wanted to double-check on the gel color. Haha. Thanks so much!!!!!!!
I love the Americolor Gel colors. They have such nice tones. I use gum glue to attach my fondant to fondant. It does not slide around as much as water. But like Deah said.. use whichever sparingly... Your decorations can slide right off if they are too wet and it does cause a mess.
Thank you so much!!!!!!! Everything turned out great-and next time I will try out the Americolor gels and the gum glue, lol!!!!!!! All of your advice is very much appreciated. =]
egg whites work also. you can buy a carton of egg whites at the super market. just paint on a small amount with a paint brush. i've actually found that to be better than water. it dries much quicker than water does on the fondat, and doesn't leave that shine behind the same way. but i also use icing if i need to stick a flower or something heavy on the side of a cake. toothpicks are also great to use since you can't see them.
Egg whites are okay to use if you aren't going to eat the pieces, like when you make figures and flowers, but you shouldn't use them on a cake since you aren't going to cook it and the egg whites are raw and that's not food safe at all... even if they are pasturized. Gum glue will give you the same texture and sticking power and be food safe.
ooo I'd never use eggwhites on something that will not be cooked either. That is a food safe no no. I don't even use them on figures and flowers just to be sure... I know it is ok on them but I always have gum glue mixed up so I just "stick" with it.
