I will be doing two postings because I can only post up to three pictures onto one post and I have more than three.

These cake balls are just so much fun to make and extremely easy.  My project took two days because I made three different types of cakes.

Cherry Chip Cake
Lemon Jello Cake - which I think turned out the BEST
Coconut Cake

As for my buttercream and for the Cake Ball recipe, I must give Credit to SeriousCakes.  You can find all of the instructions on YouTube when you look up SeriousCakes, including the Buttercream recipe that I used.

I split my buttercream into fourths so that I could have different flavors to enhance my cake balls.
Buttercream:  Cherry and Lemom
The Buttercream for the Coconut cake I didn't not flavor at all, not even with Vanilla.

I also thought about the HOW TO get the cake balls to dry with out the flat bottom that might be showing the cake and I came up with a different idea to which really worked well for me.  I am quite pleased with the results.

Congratulations! They look yummy. Never thought of using cork to make things stand up...I alway use styrofoam. That's something I'll have to keep in mind.

I also learned that if you stack the cork the toothpicks go in a lot easier.

To my surprise, all of the cakes (no box cakes) that I made really turned out great and had terrific taste. I do think the secret is not using a lot of frosting, in my case it was buttercream - a couple of dollops was all it needed. I did have to add more coconut after the cake was baked so it would taste more like coconut and more buttercream to keep it together.

How do you make them without having flat bottoms? If I use the tooth picks will the chocolate drip down? This is my first time hearing about cake balls. OMG I want to make them right now......

Please go to my cake balls, 2 or 2 posting as well. There is a tutorial from Seriouscakes which you can find on YouTube, "cake balls" then look for Seriouscakes.
I didn't have flat bottoms because I placed the toothpicks in my Frozen Cake Balls, then I dipped into the melted candy (I used what Seriouscakes suggested) As you can see, my chocolate did not drip too much because there were very few drops on the plastic wrapped cork boards. The video is really great and I suggest that you watch it and have tons of fun like I did.

I love making cake balls...or cake truffles if you use ganache! Looks like you had fun Sher! I have been thinking about what to do for our teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week... they always get cuppies from me but am thinking about cake truffles instead! They are so yummy!
Could you be so kind and share the recipe of Cake Truffles, please???? I love ganache! And if you make them, will you post a picture too???

Okay so I made cake balls last week out of some pound cake that I had left over. I added some icing and chocolate mocha flavoring. Are they suppose to be soft in the inside because mine were soft and my husband was like he thought they were suppose to be not as moist.? I froze them and then put the chocolate on them but when they thawed out they became moist.

I am no expert but when I made my three different cakes as you saw, two of the cake balls Lemon and Coconut came out fantastic and the Cherry came out just a little too MOIST for my taste. I am going to say the reasoning behind the Cherry MOIST cake balls was that I added more BC (buttercream) that was flavored with more of my sour cherry and I do believe that was the "moist" of the cake balls. I wanted less sweet and more cherry taste. I got that results but more moist. I used more than just two dollops of BC in the cherry cake balls. I'm not saying it was yuckie tasting, it just wasn't as wonderful as the other two.

So perhaps we might have had some similar final results on my cherry and yours????

I saw other cake ball recipes where they ADD SO MUCH FROSTING (CANNED) ~ A whole can of frosting that there was no way I was going to do that. I don't like frosting that much, LOL.

That is why I picked the recipe from seriouscakes.

I usually make buttercream from scratch but I had a can of frosting and used some of that. I agree I didn't want to use the whole can either. Yeah I usually use seriouscakes recipe for buttercream as well. My kids loved them oh wait they love anything that I bake lol. So maybe less frosting next time?
May I ask what you might charge per dozen for cake balls? I've started making them with my left over cake parts & they are big hit, so I thought I might start offering them for sale, just not sure what to do for pricing. I figured up the cost of ingredients on them, just a simple cake & homemade buttercream & dipping choc & then timed 3 & come up with about $12-15 a dozen, not sure if that sound reasonable or high
I have never sold them I always end up giving them away but with the chocolate to dip them in they can get a bit pricey....I guess the price would depend on if you are decorating the tops or just dipping them. There are several websites that sell them. You might google cake balls or cake truffles and see what comes up.
