It's happening to me again! Why does everyone order the fondant stuff in the summertime? Gaaaahhh!
Anyway, I made a fondant/gumpaste bow on TUESDAY for a cake due tomorrow, and it's still quite pliable thanks to the rain and humidity around here all week. Has anyone tried to dry their fondant decorations out in the oven, on a very low setting? If so, what setting and for how long? I don't want it to discolor, break, or otherwise be ruined! There is certainly no time to redo and she was very specific about what she wanted so I won't be able to get away with a substitute like last time.
Help!

Not sure where you live but I'm in central Texas and we have plenty of humidity! I frequently dry my gum paste items in my oven. I never turn the heat on. I place the items on the top shelf very near the oven light which I leave on. If you have a large quantity you should periodically turn your rack so that all items get equal time near the light. If it is very humid where you live, I would suggest that after they dry you simply move them down to the lower racks and let them remain in the oven until time to place on your cake.
This technique has never let me down. For those that live in severely humid climates, a multi tray food dehydrator works well. Just don't forget to shuffle the trays throughout the drying process. If your piece is large such as a figurine and you don't have a plain ring spacer, you can use tin snips to cut out the inner area on one of the trays to double the height.
Jennifer, what settings did you use, I was really curious as to how it worked for you. It seemed to be a great idea so I look forward to your reply

I didn't try it in the oven, because there was no time and I was too chicken! I would have to use Rosemary's suggestion though - I think the lowest setting on my oven is around 175 degrees so I'm sure the fondant would at least begin to discolor at that high temp.
I do as Rosemary does all the time. I also have a dehydrator for quick small items.
I try to start my fondant items a few weeks in advance so i don't have to worry about though.
