I was wondering if coloring fondant black would taste bad, thats what I was told from a instuctor in a class I took, she said because you have to add alot of color to make it really black, or should I buy the Satin Ice black fondant? I dont want it to taste bad but im wanting to make my own MM fondant.

I never color black or red or any other bold colors.  I always buy the precolored Satin Ice.  I know a lot of people do but for the time it takes to color it I just purchase it.  And... by purchasing it the color is always the same which is nice.
Thanks Jeri!
Start with chocolate fondant and color it from there.
was also wondering, when i roll out the fondant do i just use crisco or powdered sugar as well cuz i didnt think the powdered sugar would come out of the black..?
i buy any dark color from satin ice. when i roll out black i use cornstarch (never powder sugar, it never comes out)........then when i have the cake covered, i brush any excess cornstarch off with a big soft brush then i take my clothes steamer(got mine at cvs for $20) and steam it just a bit to make it shine and get rid of any residue left from the cornstarch.

I have tried crisco before but for me cornstarch is easier to use and manuver the fondant when i am done rolling it out.
I make my own black MMF all the time.  I add the black to the melted marshmallow and then proceed with the rest of the steps, yep it takes more powdered sugar because of the amount of black you need to use and I only use it for decoration, never to cover an entire cake (I have an air brush for that, If I ever dared!!!).  It's actually pretty easy...the key....color when the marshmallow is melted....its a snap

I was told to add coco powder to make it dark, then add balk coloring and it will be black.  Have never tried it though.  I would like to know how to make a red really really red?  Mine is never as red as i would like it.

Bought a hand steamer at walmart yesterday for $15, going to try a zebra striped cake this friday! Thanks for all the tips!
Ive made black cakes several times including a darth vadar. never noticed a bad taste.

Friend had same problem and it was brand of red she was using (wilton), then she gor sugarflair and had same problem turned out she bought the milder red (poppy).

I make all my dark colors (red, black, brown.blue) a few days in advance to allow the color to cure.

To make black I add the color directly to the melted marshmallows but only enough to make it dark grey, not black.

Then I wrap it in plastic wrap and let it sit for at least a day, it will darken and turn black.

By allowing the color to cure it reduces the amount of coloring that is needed and the less color in the fondant the better the fondant handles.

you will fall in love with the steamer :D you should also watch cake boss if you don't already he always shows alot of great things using the steamer and also on making zebra print :D
