Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

So, what did everyone think of The Next Great Baker? I was so excited to watch it and then I realized I missed it at 10 pm. I saw our member Jay Qualls in the commercial, so I'm really dying to find out when the first episode is airing again.

I understand completely.  I would not even remember a recipe by heart, LOL.  That is a great question and hopefully Jay will be able to shred some light on our interests in the recipe book.

Theresa - I had actually downloaded the application form for the show to see what they asked - it was HUGE - don't remember how many pages.  But you're right - there are bakers who don't decorate and decorators who aren't so much into the baking.  I was thinking as I watched the show, "I'd be asking where the Duncan Hines mix was" - LOL!  About half my cakes start with a mix that I then doctor or add to, so I'd be messed up if I had to come up with a recipe off the top of my head from scratch.  I wonder if they were allowed to bring their recipe books with them? (I have a binder).

Good morning!!

So did some of you catch the new episode last night?? It was alright....i didnt realize the show is also about finding "The Next Great Cook".  Sorry but i kind of found that really lame....maybe more of a filler for the show!!  Any thoughts??

BUT the cakes looked so awesome. Loved the blue and white tree...:)

I finally watched all three eposides last night.... I loved it.... Even though Corina is a little bit of a handful she does great work.  I was so excited to see Jay!! I was like, I know him!! Well only by the site and a few text when I thought I might stop by his shop on my way through Nashville, but I didn't get too.... He is great!!!

Both cakes were great last night, but someone should have helped that girl out with the cake, and the structure no one on her team could have asked if she needed some help or seen what she was doing wrong.  I guess she couldn't ask anyone either.  I felt bad for her.  But I think I have watched enough of these shows to know they use more then cardboard inbetween layers of that heavy of cake.

Loved the winter wonderland cake.  It was beautiful.  I thought it was perfect for what they were trying to do and said Christmas just as well at the other.

I agree with Meera - the cooking challenge thrown in there was pretty lame - plus all I could think was  "They want them to work with raw meat that close to where they are make RTE cake??  That seems a little like a recipe for some food poisoning to me.

And I also agree with Gretchen - a cake that big has GOT to have some internal support or it's just going to implode - I'm an amateur but even I know that!!  Sponge cake (which is what it looked like the chimney was made out of) has a LOT of air in it!

Just for fun- what could they have done to structurally support that huge stack of cakes that made up the chimney? My thought would be to do 3 layers of cake, thick dowels, 3 layers of cake, thick dowels, on up with at least 1/4" of cardboard in between each 3 layer stack.

On Monday nights it has been on several times already... I DVR all of them haha.

I have missed a few weeks on here but am slowly mending and getting back in the swing... however... watching TV I have been able to do and have seen all the episodes... personally, I think there is a bit too much drama for me.  I am just not a drama person.   And I feel like there is 2 or 3 of them that are real quality bakers/ decoraters... the rest not too impressed with.  I sure that there are a lot of cake designers out there that could have done the show more justice.  But maybe they didn't want much experience...not sure what they were looking for.   I love Buddy and his family... just wish he could stick with his show... love it the way it is.
can you give me the website where the application form is online i can not find it anywhere and i am interested in taking a look at it!

Whoops...I am still figuring out this "add reply" thing. I didn't mean to send a blank.

Anyway you wanted to know who leaves a cake in the oven. Here's my story.

I was in the play of "Hello Dolly". After the play we were having a pot luck party, for the closing of the run, the next night. I had no other time to make anything, but that night.

I made this 12" X 18" pan of brownies, after I got home from the play. It was really late. I set the timer & laid down on the sofa, to wait till it was done. The timer went off, I totally missed it, because I fell asleep.I woke up & stumbled to bed, forgetting about the brownies in the oven. The brownies were done, beyond repair. They had baked for 8 hours @ 350. What was left was a 11" X 17" piece of charcoal & a house full of smoke.

I thought that my pan would be ruined, but when I flipped it over, the chunk fell out in one piece. The pan was fine, but boy was I embarrassed. You can bet that my two daughters had a good time, with that one for sure.

You might ask what I took to the party. Well I had my husband get something from the grocery store. Which is what I should of been thinking from the start.

I bet everyone has some kind, of a most embarrassing story to tell.

I don't think it's there anymore Jordan, since the show is already taping.  I think I may have a copy on my computer though.  I'll look.
