Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I have been looking at wedding cake on the net today. Must be a new trend, cakes with stacked layers, frosting between the layers but none on the out side of the cake. But they do have flowers etc on them. Has anyone here seen them? Looks unfinished to me.

I've seen them on cake sites and I'm not a fan.  It must also be difficult to keep them from getting too dry.  Like you I think it looks unfinished.

At least that solves the problem of trying to get a smooth icing. HA HA

look at you, looking on the bright side--but now you have to worry about making the filling nice & even and make sure those layers are just perfect

I have seen them too & guessing perhaps it is for those that don't like either icing or fondant.  I don't like the look for a wedding..... too stark.  I must admit they are unusual for sure. Think for a small family function it might work, but not beyond that. Like Goreti said, how do you keep it moist???

And  can you imagine how fast one of these would dry out???  I do most of my weddings in outdoor venues in 85 to 105 heat.... just can not imagine them holding up very well.  I am not a fan but it is the detail oriented person I am that gets me!

Now... I have seen 2 kinds of "naked" cakes recently... One was the stacked tiers that are filled and that is it...

There is also an advertisement for a naked cake that is a cake covered in buttercream or fondant and no decorations on it at all.

yes Goreti , I agree with you , !

Naked cakes came to prominence nearly three years ago when Hilary Duff had one for her wedding cake.

Things to think about

1. it's difficult to charge for decorating when there is none/minimal

2. the cake drying out over the period between set-up and cutting.

3. there is no "covering" - it has to be "perfect" as it is all on display ..

That is what I had in mind Suziq when I first responded... then I saw an advertisement for a "naked cake" and it was just a cake all covered in fondant with no decorations whatsoever... will have to see if I can find it.... now if I can remember where in the heck I saw it!!!

is there not a clear coat you can use to keep it from drying out ?

I am thinking if you used a carrot cake or hummingbird cake it would be ok.... hmmmm  still not a fan... hope no one asks me for one!
