I'm pretty new to cake decorating, and I have a request for fondant letter cutouts on the side of a buttercream birthday cake. I'm afraid they'll just slide right off; has anyone tried this? (the original cake order was for a fully fondanted cake, but they decided to switch to mostly buttercream instead). I suppose I could pipe the letters instead, but I like how clean the fondant letters look (it's for a Sesame Street cake).
Also - if I want to stack two tiers of a buttercream cake without using pillars, how do you keep them from sticking together? My idea was to use a plastic seperator plate over dowels that were just just slightly higher than the cake and then pipe something to hide the construction just under the plate so the customer could just pick up the top tier to cut the cake without a lot of fuss.
(I'll remind you I'm new at all this. :) )
Thanks!
Eileen
