Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I'm pretty new to cake decorating, and I have a request for fondant letter cutouts on the side of a buttercream birthday cake.  I'm afraid they'll just slide right off; has anyone tried this? (the original cake order was for a fully fondanted cake,but they decided to switch to mostly buttercream instead).  I suppose I could pipe the letters instead, but I like how clean the fondant letters look (it's for a Sesame Street cake).

 

Also - if I want to stack two tiers of a buttercream cake without using pillars, how do you keep them from sticking together? My idea was to use a plastic seperator plate over dowels that were just just slightly higher than the cake and then pipe something to hide the construction just under the plate so the customer could just pick up the top tier to cut the cake without a lot of fuss.

Thanks, Melissa! I'll give it a try. I suppose if I do it the night before and they do slide, I can always remove them and repipe it. :) Your cake is beautiful, by the way.
Fondant letters--
I just lightly dampen the back of the fondant and place it on the BC. Some use the gumpaste glue and others use BC. Whichever way you choose only use a slight amount.

Stacking--
Here's the easiest and most economical way. Prepare your cake board for the bottom tier as usual. For your second tier cut a cake board the size of the second tier only slightly larger to allow for the BC. You don't want it too big or the board will show once the tiers are stacked. Do not stack yet. Apply and smooth BC to both tiers. Determine where you want the second tier to sit. Within that area insert straws level with the top of the bottom tier. The straws act as the support columns. If you have a small tier it may only take 3 straws, larger sized may need more. I've used as few as 3 and as many at 7. You just have to consider the size and weight of the tier. Place the second tier on the bottom and complete your decorating. If you are stacking a third tier you can do the same except you will need to place a wooden dowel down the center of all 3 layers. Sharpen the end of the dowel with a new pencil sharpener and hammer through the cake boards.

I'm looking forward to getting started on this, although I did find some cute clear columns on clearance (yeay!) that would look really cute filled with colored candies. I just didn't want it to look "formal" by using wedding columns. I think I'll do a practice stacked cake without columns for a party I'm having on Wednesday and see how it works.
