Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi everyone, ive just joined. Ive been looking for ages for a great cake site and ive finally found it !

Im kind of new to this, although i can make sugarpste flowers and shoes etc. I watched my nan for years but its only now that ive stated to do it for myself.

Please forgive me if ive posted this in the wrong place!

I made myself a birthday cake last week, for my birthday . I made a pair of black glittered high heel shoes , butterflies & flowers ( blossoms and carnations) all made fom sugarpaste.

And now ive been sked to do a 21st birthday cake ! Panic !!! What have i done ?! lol )

I have so many questions and im hoping to get some geat advice on here from you all and make some newfriends too.

Ive been asked to make a giant cupcake. With white chocolate butter icing. Could i use a white chocolate ganache instead ?

This is for the 25th nov so, hopfully enough time to get it right. I have seen the moulds for these, has anyone used one before ? Also, how much cake mix would i need ? And im terrified about piping it  ! What size nozzel? Would i need a large piping bag ?

Im so sorry for all the questions!

Thank you for any help with all this.

I'm thinking I have got to get me one of these giant cupcake moulds - they sound really fun to do.

And Mandy - you're welcome.  You are the cupcake queen lol!

Wow thank you so much for your help! Your welcome, your giant cupcake is brill :-)

Can i ask how much mix you use for one of these,( im not very good at working it out ) I havent orderd a mould yet and would like just an idea of how much i will be needing.

Thank you again :-)

For my mould I make up 10oz mixture this does top & bottom x

Thank you ! Um, what nozzel will i need ? I know it will be a large one !

Would it need to be an ' open star ' ? And a large piping bag ? Im sorry for all the questions!

Thanks again

Lisa x

Thanks for the kind comments Lisa, keep at the roses it does come sooner or later and no they're not my favourite flowers either but everybody wants flipping roses on their cakes so you better get used to doing them. Lol. It's just finding the way that suits you best I know some people find it easier to make them 1 petal at a time but I prefer using the rounded 5 petal cutter. It does take a bit of practise thinning the base down but keep at it I know you can do it if your 1st cake is anything to go by. Start with a 26 gauge wire and you can always tape another wire in if you find it needs more support later on. Have a peek at you tube too there's loads of short video tutorials there that's how I first started x

Thank you so much Les, i started making them a petal at a time, and i thought that was why i was having a prob with them. I have got a petal cutter now.

I tried using a cockatil stick to put the cone on but it was nightmare, as the sugarpaste dried it wouldnt stick and then poked through the top of the rose and ruined it.

I got in such state over doing them for my cake. Then i thought hang on, what am i doing...i dont even LIKE roses !!! Hence no roses on my cake lol

Thank you for the help :-)

Lisa

lisa are you using sugarpaste for your flower work or petal / gum paste? sugarpaste is fine for unwired flowers that stay soft enough to eat but its a flippin nightmare to work with and virtually impossible if your going to wire them, flowerpaste will dry very hard and brittle like porcelain but so much easier to work with, start with your cone leave it 24 hours to dry then work one layer of petals at a time allowing them to dry before proceeding to the next layer, it does take patience but if you have a few on the go at once then you will find that its much easier the main thing is however great the temptation dont rush them just take your time and if your doing lots of different flowers at the same time all the better as you will always find something to do.

oh my I do hope not I'm not sure that sugar glue works on people and you it would spoil you with all those cracks lol

LOL !! Im using sugarpaste for the flowers but adding tragacanth . I have looked it petal paste ( sorry i cant type for laughing ) and i cant seem to get it in any colour but white ?

My local ish shop is expensive for a small ammount of flowerpaste . I cant afford the gel colour sets yet to colour my own so im using regal ice and tragacanth.

That could be the problem then ?

When i first started,i didnt have any sugarpaste so i just played around with the ready rolled icing, even marzipan both were ok but obviously broke and cracked easily. But it was ok to play around with.

Then i got a huge block of pme to play with.
