Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

So, I have this cake business I've been trying to start from home.  I am not currently licensed to sell cakes out of my house.  I'm waiting until I have enough business to justify the expense.  So, for now I am pretty much banking on word of mouth, which unfortunately hasn't panned out to well.  I've done a small handful of cakes.  My next order is only for the end of September.  I haven't advertised at all because I don't want to bring too much attention to myself by the BOH.  And advice on the best way to get more exposure without being exposed?  I'm not trying to get away with anything, as much as just build before spending more than I have.  Once I have a more regular flow of orders, I am already planning to get the license.

I have done the same thing. From a legal aspect you shouldn't advertise unless you are in a licensed kitchen. Mine has happened accidentally. It started by my cousin asking me if I could make fancy cupcakes, I did. I made some for my husband to take to work for Christmas. The plant manager had one of my cupcakes then flagged my husband down and asked if I would make the company cakes for them (they were
buying publix) I've since made a few for his Co workers .I've also made several for my Co workers and had repeat business and never advertise. Everytime I make a cool cake I take a pic on my phone and show it to people at work. People talk, it'll happen.I would love to own my place but like you I'm not ready. Start you a portfolio of your work, Facebook. Casually talk about it around other people. Word will spread if your cakes are good I promise that. Cupcakes are cheap to make, package some up either individually, six pack, however and give away a few to some people you know. Places you go often like the bank, church, school teachers offer to make them for your kids class. The more people know about it the better. They will spread it for you. This is a nice gesture and the best advertisement without actually advertising. Hope this helps and best wishes!

Thanks Nicole.  Funny enough, I've already done all the suggestions you mentioned.  I have 170 "likes" on facebook.  Half are friends, half are from others around the world.  Unfortunately, it seems that even though people know about me and have seen my work, i'm just not getting the traffic I would hope by now.  And, I'm not expecting a lot.  I would be ecstatic with one or two cakes a month.  On the upside, the cake I have for the end of the month is a Bar Mitzvah cake.  It's the first Bar Mitzvah of the season.  So, I'm hoping it opens the door.  It could be could for a cake a week if it works out.   I'm going overboard on the cake and doing a lot more that is being paid for.  I want people to really see what I am capable of.

Thanks Diana.  But, my friends and family can't afford me.  LOL!  The cakes I've done so far have brought in an average of about $300.  I'm happy to do smaller cakes.  But the orders just haven't been coming.  I have baked cakes for fundraisers, as well as donated gift certificates to those charity's raffles.  The Bar Mitzvah cake I am doing is one of those certificates.  However, she is applying it towards a more expensive cake.  I looked at the article you recommended. I don't feel it really applies to me because I am doing strictly cakes.  No other baked goods.  Not even cupcakes if I can help it.  I would like to make a name for myself doing more interesting, fun cakes.  You can see some of my work at my facebook page:  Kentastic Cakes.  They are definitely not your typical cakes.  Thanks again.

thanks.  Now, if I can just get more people to make them for.  LOL!!
