Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Dear experts (and anyone else that has an idea for that matter),

I want to make a square base about 5 inches square on which to place a cake topper, so that it can be taken off a top tier and repositioned on a bottom tier so the cake will work for 2 parties.  What do you think is the strongest medium to use for this - pastillage, modelling paste, gum paste?  I don't really want it to be solid as it will be too heavy for the cake it will stand on.  I would prefer to have it like an upside down empty box.... The topper shouldn't come out too heavy as it will be a silhouette and a kind of plaque.  Any ideas appreciated, thanks

What is the cake for Katy???

June, it's for my stepdaughters 50th birthday.  I have a rough idea of what I'm going to do.  Basically 2 tier, colour scheme is ivory, gold and black.  Topper of Art Deco style sign with a black silhouette of glamorous lady (silhouette done this afternoon - 3 attempts!).  I think the bottom layer will be ivory with quilting design studded with black sugar pearls.  Second tier - all sorts of ideas going through my head.  Maybe a lace trim, maybe an art deco style pattern.....  Topper will stand on my styrofoam box (God willing), which will be ivory, maybe patterned, maybe not.  Lots of maybe's in there eh?

If the topper is going to be saved, I have made wood bases to attach the topper to. Easy to place and also save for later.

I can't always put on paper, sketch wise, what I see in my head. Very frustrating eh Kary?? I looked into cake design software, but being that it is just a hobby, really couldn't justify spending $$ on it.

Yes June - I have a large sketchpad and usually do a rough drawing to size and proportion it out.  This time I have  drawn and painted some things to get an overall idea.  Did some playing around yesterday and think I have a more definite idea in my head now of what I'm going to do.  Getting short on time, so this time I might have to stick to the plan!

Chris, I wondered about getting my husband to make me something, but was concerned about the weight as it will be a sponge cake.  So this time I am going to go with the styrofoam block.  Thanks for the suggestion x

?????? what is PASTILLAGE ? AND THE FOAM SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD IDEA JUNE !

It is another medium to work with Gail. Basically gelatin, cream of tartar, cornstarch, water & icing sugar. It dries really, really hard. Great for 3 d objects....like making a picture frame or something similar. I tried to use for flowers, but it dries to fast, not enough working time for me. If you want a recipe, I can certainly give you the one I have used.    :o)

The foam has worked June!  Covered it in fondant yesterday and embossed it.  Will try to get the embossing painted up today.  You can buy pastillage powder ready to mix here btw - I'm always for the easy option lol

Well Katy
I go to a decorator warehouse about 45-50 min from here when I need big items. Most likely they have something like this. They have their own brand of pwd royal icing. Trouble is they are ALWAYS out of stock!! To far to drive when 1/2 the stuff you want ISN'T there!!

I WOULD LOVE IT , THANK YOU SO MUCH , HUMM ITS SOME THING NEW TO ME THANK YOU THANK YOU ; X
